I have long long hair and I like to keep it that way. However, Its difficult to maintain long hair and yet have it looking styled. I am petrified of walking into a salon, discussing the importance of maintaining the lenght of my hair with the stylist and ending up with what I consider as short hair. So when I first tried Dean of Shadyside I was sitting at the edge of my seat, explaining to my stylist Jessica that I need a new style that has me feeling and looking different without compromizing the lenght. As difficult a task as it may seem Jessica did just that for my hair. She gave me a Fabulous hair cut and the lenght was maintained. And it was probably the best haircut Ive had. Needless to say, Im a regular now and I always get great advice on how to style my hair . I recomended the place to several of my friends and they all have become regulars now. The service is very professional and the experience is well worth the money spent. Brilliant I say!
Pros: Good service, free parking
Cons: very busy have to wait for appointments with preffered stylists.

I've been going to Dean of Shadyside for a few years now, and I love them. The cuts are incredible and while they maybe expensive by some pittsburgh standards, I think they are quite affordable. And the cut that you'll get here is worth the price. The stylists are great at offering advice about styles that suit your face and your lifestyle; they don't push products down your throat; they are always 100% unpretentious. I've also been to Dean for manicures, and for whatever reason the polish seems to last much longer than at other places I've been (maybe the heat lamps? maybe the quality of polish?). Everyone is always polite, and I genuinely feel good about myself every time I leave there.
Pros: great cuts and consultation

I was (key word - was) a customer of Dean of Shadyside Salon in Wexford for almost two years. On one occasion, I went to a regularly scheduled appointment - only to find out my current stylist had quit several weeks earlier. No one from the salon ever called me - and I was just placed with someone else. Okay - no problem - liked the new stylist and all turned out well. However - the next appointment I had with him - very early on a Saturday morning- which I fit into an extremely packed schedule (on a night I was going to a big event - right before leaving on vacation - when a family member of mine was in the hospital for an extended amount of time) was cancelled - get this - one half hour prior to my appointment. I was already on the road on my way to the salon - and I asked why they were cancelling my appointment. I was told my stylist called off sick - to which I replied - "Okay, things happen - can you please fit me in with someone else - because I have a lot going on right now, a big event tonight and this is the only day I have to come in....." The girl on the other end of the phone said - "Nope - sorry - all stylists are booked - call again when you can make time to come in". That was it - no checking with the stylists, no offers for help - no future discounts - nothing. Needless to say - I found another salon, who took me right away as a walk-in that morning - did a great job with my hair- and charged me half the amount. My crisis was averted - but I will NOT be returning to Dean of Shadyside in Wexford. Customer service skills there are severely lacking and - so much for being a two-year customer. I know if I treated people that way where I work - my company would be in danger of going out of business. Some consideration for my situation would have been nice, and at the very least, professional.

I really feel sorry for the front desk girls. they are rude, but the fact remains that it is a circus in there and for that maybe i can understand. the whole salon is run terrible, theres no order in the ENTIRE salon. i had a 2 pm appointment on a tuesday and they were so behind. i ended up being taken back to get shamoo'd after 3pm! all though, thats not the worst of it. i ended up sitting with a wet head for 30 minutes after the wash! i 86'd the color cause i did not want to move in there, so i figured a trim was best. i expressed that i was mildly upset with the wait, but the hair dresser couldnt of cared less! no tip for you! might want to think about being a tiny bit more sympathetic before you lose your tip dumb@$$. but its their living not mine, thank god! guess they live off ramon noodles! i hope SOMEONE in the salon reads this and realizes they charge way too much for the services they provide. they think just cause they in uppidy shadyside, they can be snobs and over charge for services. ITS A BUSINESS, no matter where the location is. it makes you wonder if "DEAN" evens pays these people, maybe thats why they dont care. PAY UP DEAN....YOU STAFF OBVIOUSLY NEEDS IT!
Pros: they take walk ins, and were able to schedule my appointment fast, they are in a great area, later hours
Cons: price for service and products, attitudes, waiting, waiting, waiting.

I went here a couple of times and Richard did a great job with my color. The problem is the first time I went they got color on my shirt (I even had on a robe). I pointed it out to them and they didn't even offer to have it drycleaned. They also let me walk out of there with color on my forehead and cheek. I scheduled my appointment so far in advance that I forgot to write it down. No one ever called me to remind me of the appointement. They finally called me an hour after the appointment was scheduled asking me if I was coming. When I said no one called to remind me, she said that their receptionist marked it that she did call which was a total lie. Again, I feel a bit bad writing this because Richard was great with the color (the style was ok) , but the other stuff is not worth it.

I have been going to Dean of Shadyside since moving to Pittsburgh 2 1/2 years ago, and I've never been disappointed. Holly B. has been a great stylist and colorist- I have been a blonde, a brunette, and even a redhead and each color has been natural and flattering. Holly (and the rest of the staff) are eager to listen to what I need and are friendly and attentive. I highly recommend this salon!!!
Pros: well-trained and friendly stylists, up-to-date on current hair trends

Ken is amazing. Hands down most in depth consulation ever. His assistant did her job (spent 10 minutes washing and conditioning my hair, without commenting on her opinion of what he should do. She also didn't badmouth other people), he spent 20 minutes feeling my long curly hair that I wear straight, and determing the best path to undo that hack job someone back home did. I was early for my appointment, and got right in. The friendly staff hung up my coat, and put a robe on me. All in all, everyone was very friendly. The only con was the price, for shoulder blade length hair (Ken is a level III) it was $40 for the cut, you add in $10 tip...I think that is a lot, compared to other salons. HOWEVER, that being said, save your pennies ladies, very worth it. I am in law school, and I would rather eat Ramen for a week and have great hair, then sacrifice it for a $25 job at supercuts.
Pros: staff, location, skill, personal service
Cons: price

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!!!! I WAITED OVER 2 HOURS TO GET IN, EVEN THOUGH I HAD AN APPOINTMENT, THE STAFF WAS RUDE AND SNOBBY, AND I ENDED UP WITH THE UGLIEST HAIR. THE STYLIST, IF YOU WANT TO CALL HER THAT, DYED MY HAIR BLACK AND RED AND CLAIMED THAT IT WAS REALLY DARK BROWN. I DIDN'T EVEN LET PUT SCISSORS TO MY HAIR AFTER THAT HORRIBLE DYE JOB. I ENDED UP LEAVING LOOKING LIKE A DROWNED WITCH. OH AND SHE EXPECTED ME TO PAY. HA!
Pros: Location
Cons: Ignorant and rude staff, expensive, appointment times mean nothing

I am moving out of the Pittsburgh area and am very sad to be leaving this wonderful salon, so I decided to write a review and share the love. I have been going to this salon for about 2 years and it is great. They have every service you can imagine, even a spa, and the prices are reasonable for a professional salon (especially for the exceptional service you recieve). Richard is my stylist and he is amazing. You can tell that he is not only passionate about what he does, but that he is also an expert. After giving me a 20 minute consultation where he learned about my hair history and questioned me about what i was looking for, he gave me the best haircut I could possibly imagine. I will probably try to schedule my hair appointments for when I am back visiting Pittsburgh; I am afraid I won't find anyone as good! I have had friends go to other stylists, and they have done a great job too. Definitely recommended!

THIS SALON IS HORRIBLE, THE RECPETIONISTS ARE NASTY AND RUDE AS WELL AS CARRY A FUNNY SMELL THAT IS VERY OFFENSIVE! THE JOB THAT WAS DONE ON MY HAIR LOOKS LIKE A FIVE YEAR OLD DID IT, I WILL NOT MENTION WHICH STYLIST DID THIS OF COURSE, BUT I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND ANYONE GO TO THIS PLACE. AND LETS NOT FORGET THAT THE PRICES ARE OUTRAGIOUS, AND FOR WHAT?
