best hair cut EVER
by User250
My first visit was when I decided I was going to donate my hair to Locks of Love. I was able to get a walk-in appointment on a Saturday and was referred to Angela. I had never chopped all my hair off before and was nervous. She was EXCELLENT! She explained everything that she was going to do and how she thought to cut it. I also have curly hair so cutting it short can be a very scary thing. I have to say she gave me the best hair cut I have ever had. It is the one I always wanted and didn't know it. I have continued to go to Angela and she always makes sure I'm happy with the cut, and listens if there are any changes. She also makes awesome color recommendations! She is so nice and professional I would recommend her to anyone. I have moved and am sad that I had to leave her. There isn't much I miss about Pittsburgh but one thing is going here to get my hair cut and colored. Thanks Angela!!
- Pros: Clean, Professional, excellent consultations
- Cons: A bit pricey- but worth it
One of a kind!

Dean of Shadyside is by far one of the most unique and professional salons I ever experienced. I am a mwm and like my hair cut very short. Rather than using clippers like most of the salons in the area, the stylists use shears. Their training is ongoin and techniques are custom to each guest. Its an experience that I truly enjoy and keep coming back for more!
Leave feeling like a goddess!

Such a pleasurable experience! Everyone one from Jason at the front desk, to Katherine the stylist's assistant, to Richard the stylist were sweet, attentive, and professional! I came in there with a curly mess of long hair that hadn't been attended to in 9 months, and I left with hair worthy of an Herbal Essence commercial. I couldn't have asked for better service, a better style, or a better stylist!

I recently moved to Pittsburgh and have been seeking a hair salon. I will preface this by saying that I am a woman in my thirties with several children. I am very active in gay and lesbian rights. I read an excellent review of a gay-owned salon in 'Out' magazine a while back, but forgot the name of the salon. I have been searching the net this evening to find the salon owned by the gay business man featured in "Out" when I came across the review of "Dean's Salon" by Karen. Karen apparently was put off by a confident and proud gay man and therefore fervently does not recommend this individual or the salon called 'Dean's'. I was so repulsed by Karen's homophobia that I am now going to go to Dean's simply because if someone as obviously outdated as Karen is put off by their services, I am certain I will be thrilled with their work! I can only imagine the dreadful style that 'Dean's Salon' saved Karen from inflicting on herself. I say kudos to the out and proud gay man (Richard) who had to put up with homophobic-attention starved-Karen for an hour. Karen, if you have a problem with homosexuals, perhaps you should avoid any of the city's cultural districts and stop looking at art or enjoying film while you are at it. The gay and lesbian community enriches our lives more than most of us realize, I have a gay son and I just hope that one day my son has the courage to be out and proud like the gentleman that gave you an hour of his time at 'Dean's'. I will most definitely be calling for an appointment right away!
Richard,...Horrible,...
by karenjop
A girl friend of mine recently began going to this salon and gave me a card for a free hair cut with the person she has been seeing. So I call and make my appointment with this Richard fellow. I show up 15 minutes prior to my appointment, where I am greeted kindly by the front desk staff, and asked to fill out some paper work. No problem. I'm greeted by what appeared to be other staff members, who inquired as to whether they could offer me a beverage, very polite. No problem. I then proceed to wait another 45 minutes in the waiting room,...basically this guy is 30 minutes late for my appointment. I'm then ushered to Richard where he speaks to me as a 4 year old girl and refuses to let me talk to him about my hair until I'm shampooed. Finally when I get back to his chair, he is working on someone in the next chair, completely ignoring me. He does this for another 15 minutes. Finally when he starts talking to me about me hair, I tell him what I want, and he begins telling me how it's not good for me, and begins telling me what he wants to do. Whoa,...I'm paying, do what I ask. I understand he should have his opinion, but he was way too forceful. I painfully allowed him his way. Then for the next 30 minutes he talked about how great he was and how proud he is to be gay. NEVER NEVER GO TO THAT MAN!
Angela is the best stylist ever!!!

I was in PGH on vacation and decided to get my hair cut and colored. I was a bit apprehensive because I have ethnic hair..but decided to go for it since i was in a big city. Angela was fantastic. She explained everything she was going to do and explained what would/ would not work with my color and texture. She was proffessional and friendly and recommended the Pureology line (which is organic, smells great, and makes my hair silky and smooth, not to mention is anti-fade which is perfect to maintain my color). I have never had highlights that were the absolute perfect "caramel" tone until she did them...the blowout and her flatiron technique made my hair straight, smooth, and glossy. Recommend her to anyone. I will travel to Pittsburgh every 3 months just so she can do my hair, I will never go to anyone else ever if I can help it!
- Pros: clean, proffessional, experienced stylists
- Cons: bit pricey, but worth it
Richard is a Hair Artist Who Listens
by RockinDiva
If you have been searching your whole life for a hair stylist -- no, hair ARTIST is more accurate -- call Dean of Shadyside and make an appointment with Richard. Richard doesn't just look at your hair; he looks at your whole person: lifestyle, personality, time constraints, style of dressing -- even your makeup, then creates a cut, style and color that works to your best advantage. I always feel like a goddess when I emerge from a "Richard Session" and have never been disappointed. Highly highly highly recommend.
Note for new clients: there is free parking behind the building. The receptionist did not inform me about this wonderful perk when I made my first appointment, so I want to promote it.
Not a guinea pig!!!
by ChaosLoomz
All I have to say is the prices are outrageous. They advertise to be a high end salon, and then you go there and there are beauty school people attending to your hair. I'm sorry but for the prices they charge I want the stylist who I made the appointment with to do my hair, this includes mixing the color and applying it. It also includes blowdrying. At those prices I am not paying to be a guinea pig for a beauty school employee. I understand that people have to learn, however the salon should offer their services at discounted prices, and the customer should have a choice or not weather the beauty school stylist works on thir hair.
Feels Like a Million Bucks!

I have long long hair and I like to keep it that way. However, Its difficult to maintain long hair and yet have it looking styled. I am petrified of walking into a salon, discussing the importance of maintaining the lenght of my hair with the stylist and ending up with what I consider as short hair.
So when I first tried Dean of Shadyside I was sitting at the edge of my seat, explaining to my stylist Jessica that I need a new style that has me feeling and looking different without compromizing the lenght. As difficult a task as it may seem Jessica did just that for my hair. She gave me a Fabulous hair cut and the lenght was maintained. And it was probably the best haircut Ive had. Needless to say, Im a regular now and I always get great advice on how to style my hair . I recomended the place to several of my friends and they all have become regulars now. The service is very professional and the experience is well worth the money spent. Brilliant I say!
- Pros: Good service, free parking
- Cons: very busy have to wait for appointments with preffered stylists.
great salon

I've been going to Dean of Shadyside for a few years now, and I love them. The cuts are incredible and while they maybe expensive by some pittsburgh standards, I think they are quite affordable. And the cut that you'll get here is worth the price. The stylists are great at offering advice about styles that suit your face and your lifestyle; they don't push products down your throat; they are always 100% unpretentious. I've also been to Dean for manicures, and for whatever reason the polish seems to last much longer than at other places I've been (maybe the heat lamps? maybe the quality of polish?). Everyone is always polite, and I genuinely feel good about myself every time I leave there.
- Pros: great cuts and consultation
