Cute, Classic Diner
by jcpepboys
This diner is authentic, cheap, and solid. The food is exactly what you'd expect at a diner, which is mostly pretty delicious.
- Pros: Hours, prices
- Cons: Unattentive/unfriendly waitstaff
Good service, bad food
by jmosbff
This place was much more appealing before the smoking ban took effect. It used to be a nice little spot for coffee and cigarettes, and okay diner food. The servers there are usually wonderful, attentive, and sweet. But lately food quality has declined. I was served dry pancakes with COLD blueberry syrup on top. My boyfriend asked for his eggs extra-dry and was served a visibly-greasy scramble. Nice place to visit in the wee morning hours if you're just looking for sustenance but I wouldn't recommend this place for a meal out with friends or family.
- Pros: great service (usually), reasonably priced, late-night dining
- Cons: terrible food
exactly what you want in a 24 hour diner
by pghstillers
I grew up where every small town has a 24 hour diner. Ritter's reminds me of those places with its decor and menu. The prices here are rock bottom, and it's a good option for late night dining. The crowd that gathers here is eclectic, to say the least, but one thing that is an overriding theme after midnight is a collective state of inebriation. Sunday mornings are very busy with the church crowd, so you'll have to wait a while for a table. Living in bloomfield, I used to frequent Ritter's often, and I never had a problem with the place or the food being dirty. The reviewers on here that claim that this place is filthy or has unclean food are obviously just being melodramatic and/or immature. Find out for yourself, the price is always right here. Try the buckwheat pancakes while you're at it.
- Pros: parking, prices, fast service
If that bar from Star Wars served food...
by PGHnomad76
I first went to Ritter's as a college student looking for food at 3 AM. I think the fact it is open 24 hrs, and is almost as cheap as fast food, draws students who live in the Friendship area, along the Center Ave, Baum Blvd, South Negley corridor of bus routes to Oakland, and the bar crowds from Shadyside after last call. That's why I went. I also recall the food being pretty good diner fair, like good meatloaf sandwiches and pie, and generous breakfast portions. They also have their own parking lot. At the time the convenience and cheap eats outweighed the negatives. And the negatives, I have to say in the name of honesty, included crazy people causing a disturbance, and on one occasion a guy arguing with a wall in the restroom while urinating in the sink when I walked in.
I went back recently after about ten years had passed. The food was not as good as I remember it. I had breakfast and the eggs were overcooked and dry, and the potatoes not cooked all the way through. The place was still dirty though. They have an ATM inside but don't take credit cards. And the crowd was much as I remember. There were a few students and retirees, and I think some nurses from a hospital, but there were also an assortment of characters who looked like they were fired by the circus, or drifters who just got out of jail. Scary. If my food wasn't bad enough, the smell of the people sitting in the booth next me actually made me gag. I didn't finish or bother complaining, I just paid my bill and left as quick as I could. I went there a lot as college student, and I am a late night diner lover, but wouldn't recommend it now.
- Pros: Open 24hrs. Free parking. Friendly waitresses
- Cons: Mediocre food. Dirty. They don't take credit cards.
It's a diner alright.

I read the other reviews and frnkly I was appalled at the negative remarks that were made by others. I have never been there when the place was dirty or when the managment was nasty to the waitresses. We have always had good food, great service and a good time overall at Ritters. If it was bad as the others say would it still be around. Hell no! I highly recommend this place to all my friends and family. Cheap eats and a good time.
- Pros: Great prices, good food, and great staff.
Gross and Mean
by pghguy
I went to Ritters for dinner one night. I had not been there in 20 years. It was beyond a doubt the worst place I ever been to in my life. Mean waitress, dirty, food was so bad that I left as fast as I could.

Never offered to take them away and make us new eggs nor offered to take it off our bill, TOTAL PIGS!!!!! FILTHY PIGS!!! Eat there if your trying to commit suicide.

The wait staff is great you cant find another one like it. Genna is one of there cutest and funniest waitresses and she really knows what shes doing. You cant go anywhere else and find a family owned restaurant like this..... where else can go where you can eat great food and listen to your private jukebox at your table?
- Pros: weekend breakfast are the BEST!!! especially after a hangover
