We cannot let our historical places pass us up because our present shows it's ugly face. H and C are everywhere people. Leave your judgement and fear at the door, spend your dollars here and bring some balance into the place. They have wonderful beer.

You guys are way too judgemental. Chief's is a classic. It hasn't changed for over 40 years, and I hope it never does. It should be on the registry of historic places. Granted, the crown may be a little rough around the edges, but that's what makes it Chiefs. I can remember 15 cent drafts, and Norm, the owner/bartender had a tendency to give change only in snacks. But that was back in the days when you could buy a case of Bud cans at the beer distributor next door for $4.99. Save the penny change and you can buy a case with the pennies each month. And it was close to the original Luna, may Larry RIP. Memories are made of this...
Pros: The atmosphere
Cons: The atmosphere

about 15 years ago my friend got shot in Chief's. not long after i saw their large bouncer Tony (who died of an H overdose) tomahawk chop a woman in the face outside of the bar. since then, i think the violence has died down, but the college kids have disappeared and the heroin is out in full force. they need to tear this place down and save a few lives..the little middle eastern place next door is really tasty though!!!!
Pros: they might pay taxes???
Cons: just about everything

I live behind this place and complain to my Landlord all the time about it. There are hypos out back & the other reviewers are right: Junkies Love this Place for some reason. The bar itself has a ton of character, but its a filthy pigstye and the crowd their is fitting for the environment. Some fat kid inherited from his old man and ran it into the ground. He recently lost a ton of weight so he either had his stomach stapled or is shooting up himself. I'll be the first to cry out CLOSE CHIEFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pros: a good place to close down
Cons: H, derelicts, and homeless folks

OK this place is terrible. I have had several friends die from H overdoses which they copped from this place. I have nothing but horrible memories from this place. When I was a junkie, I basically live at Chief's & the old Thirsty's at Dead night. Chiefs would open early & close late. They all knew what we were up to. The new kid that owns it Petey is nice, but he's all about the cash. He doesnt care about the H or the crowd. If you like sorrow, despair, death and addiction: this is your bar. Otherwise STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with the last posting. This place needs boarded up & closed down, along with Mitchell's Tavern and Luna. They are all dope bars. Lots of Heroin AND rocks. My friend was at Chief's years ago when someone got shot right in front. The bouncer that they had, Tony, died of a H overdose. Not a good scene when your bouncer is a junkie
Pros: None
Cons: Everything, and many ex-cons loaf there..

This is a dangerous place. Don't go here unless you are lookin' for a stamp bag of H. This gets the gold trophy as Pittsburgh's premier low life, dreg of society, drugged out hole. It's a shame because back in the day this was just a good cheap, eclectic dive bar. College students, old men, and Bukowski-esque booze hounds would congregate here....that was then, now it caters to H-addicts, bums, and dregs. I was in there several months ago and this young greasy bearded bum covered in his own feces and mud, with shoes that looked like they went through a meat grinder came shuffling in backwards. He ordered a beer, paid for it in loose change and stunk up the whole joint. It's a shame that the owners let this place go. It has a lot of character and it's in a unique area, they are just complacent with catering to the Hill's H-heads.
Pros: H availability
Cons: everything
