Very cost-efficient place to fill up for college students

by JasonKam at Citysearch

Against most negative reviews that look for too much when paying too little, Golden Palace buffet is probably the cheapest place you can find for some par-quality Chinese food. $7 with your student ID card is a steal, and honestly, although the selection is quite generic, it tastes similar to what most American Chinese restaurants have to offer. The lady who works there is nice, utensils and plates clean, and the setting itself is not sketchy at all.

I would definitely recommend it to Pitt or CMU folks who are looking for a filling dinner--it this place doesn't pan out, Chipotle is always next door.

  • Pros: On-par quality food, reasonable price
  • Cons: Can't say much when paying $7 for a ton of food

Not as bad as some say!

by 56730187 at Citysearch

I've been going to this place for the buffet since 8 years ago when I was a Pitt student. To me the food is real good....I don't know why some people wrote that the food was horrible....haters. In all the 8 years I've been going there, the food was never horrible; the worse it's been is average (like 7 out of ten). And the price is good; $7 isn't bad for an all-you-can-eat. Also, Pitt students get a 15% discount on the dinner buffet.

The down side: At times they run out of certain selections quick and take a while to replace them. It's best to taste-test the clear drinks at the soda fountain before completely filling your cup...sometimes it hasn't been refilled and it's just fizzy water. Happened to me twice.

Otherwise, the place is good for hanging out, getting a quick bite with some friends. Oh, and the sugar-sprinkled biscuits are the best.

  • Pros: good food, good price, friendly staff
  • Cons: slow refills on some buffet selections

singapore noodles

by epsonstylus at Citysearch

I haven't been here since last year, so I don't know what it's like now. I've only gotten stuff that I recognize as authentic (not Americanized) Chinese food, and I've never eaten at the buffet. Most of the time my experience has been good. I've gotten the breaded fish with celery, ginger, and rice (I don't remember what it's called on the menu); Chinese style ("shrimp?") wonton; potstickers; beef brisket noodles; a few kinds of pan-fried noodles; curry and squid; mustard vegetable and squid; and beef and flat rice noodles. Sometimes the wonton didn't seem that fresh, and the beef and flat rice noodles didn't have much beef. For the wonton, I'm assuming the problem had to do with few people ordering that kind of wonton. The fish and rice, pan-fried noodles, and squid were consistently good.

What I got most often is the Singapore rice noodles. They're always consistent. For $7, I got a styrofoam box stuffed with food. There's some different kinds of vegetables, and there's roast pork, chicken, shrimp, and eggs. It's mildly flavored with curry. It's cheaper and has more food and meat than other Chinese places I've ordered from. It's a better value than most other kinds of fast food and probably other items on the menu. It might not be a flavor you want to eat all the time, but I strongly recommend you try it, especially if you're thinking about getting some other kind of food from this restaurant.

  • Pros: good quality real Chinese food for Pittsburgh
  • Cons: the buffet and regular food doesn't look that good; restaurant looks dark and dingy

Buffet of mediorcity

by PittWorker at Citysearch

There wasn't anything special about the lunch buffet. Nothing was great, but a few things were terrible. I found the buffet to be mediocre at best. For $6.25 it's not a bad deal, but I definitely won't be in a rush to return.

  • Pros: $6.25 for buffet
  • Cons: Taste

Tasty Chinese food

by ouyangck at Citysearch

I tried Hunan beef and it was not bad. I like it for the location and menu options. It might not have the variety some other restaurants do but I can still find things I enjoy.

  • Pros: Convenient for pittsburgher working downtown
  • Cons: Relatively small portion

The Award for the Worst Chinese Food Goes to........

by glitterk15 at Citysearch

I went here on a whim looking for some Chinese food and boy was that the worst mistake ever. Never before have I had Chinese food that I was not able to eat. Everything that we ordered from this place was disgusting. My advice: Stay far away!

You couldn't pay me to eat here.

by nathanielc2177 at Citysearch

After you pay the $7.00 for the buffet, you are seated fast and quickly dissappointed with the food. There is a terrible selection of food, and the food they do have is theeee worst food i have ever eaten. This is the first buffet I have ever left hungry because the food was so terrible. I don't think they have any repeating customers because anyone who goes there once knows never to go back.
