I took my cat, Max, to this vet as a new patient. He didn't feel well. Dr. Zambon said to leave him for tests. Shortly after, she called and said he was in renal failure with complications. I tried to ask what the prognosis was. Dr. Zambon absolutely refused to say--she just blathered on without structure for a mind-numbing length of time. When I tried to ask questions, she talked louder. I gathered Max needed extensive treatment and since he was old, I didn't want him to go through it. I told her I would have him put to sleep, but I wanted to spend some time with him first. She said ok. At the office, overwhelmed, I talked with the receptionist--the money, the diagnosis, the remains, the details. She said, "We'll sedate Max and bring him up for you. Then when you're ready we'll put him to sleep." When they brought him, he was lifeless, eyes staring, mouth hanging open, barely breathing. I was horrified. Max was my dearest companion for years. He always put his arms around my neck as if he was hugging me, even right before I left him there. I wanted to share a moment with him, to look in his eyes and feel him purr one last time. But they handed me a comatose body. I immediately asked them to put him to sleep and I said that I couldn't believe they deprived us of our last goodbye. The vet insisted Max was still conscious. Three employees including the vet crowded into the room and jumped down my throat, saying I asked for sedation and it's always done this way. I was so upset, I just ran out. Later, they called my cell and said, "What do you want us to do with your cat?" Although I had already asked them to put him to sleep. I repeated that I had wanted to visit with him, and they said, "You could have--he's conscious." So I asked if I could come back and see him. They put me on hold, disconnected me, I called back, and they said, "No, I guess because his kidneys shut down, he can't handle the anesthetic and he might not ever wake up." But they never apologized.
