What users are saying:
Elegant dining with excellent service
by milnivlek at Citysearch
My girlfriend and I ate here for the first time a week ago. I was very impressed by the highly attentive yet unobtrusive service that we received from the wait staff, as well as by the simple yet elegant decor. The fine environment perfectly matched the high quality of the food we received. We had some of the best veal and mahi mahi we'd ever treated our taste buds to, served in portions that were just right. We topped off our meal with white chocolate cheesecake, which (like the entrees and the restaurant in general) was sumptuous but not pretentious, delicious but not decadent. We enjoyed our meal there very much, and look forward to future visits.
- Pros: Elegant ambience, excellent food, parking lot
- Cons: Pricey menu
A shimmering star in the South Side
by Contributor at Citysearch
The Scene
The South Side is a neighborhood in transition, from the older Eastern Europeans to the younger and hip. On the elegant end of this spectrum stands Cafe Allegro, a much-loved Mediterranean restaurant.
Who's There
Cafe Allegro is a destination for both food lovers and just plain lovers. It attracts a handsome crowd, and getting a reservation around Valentine's Day is often difficult.
The Food
Cafe Allegro offers lots of seafood, with some meat and vegetarian dishes in the mix. There's an exceptional pear, endive and walnut salad, a fine palate cleanser. For the pasta course, try the pasta del sol.
In Addition
There's always a nice selection of fish on the menu, cooked to its maximum potential. Try the salmon in papillote with scallops, shrimp and julienne vegetables, served with a champagne sauce. Beef lovers rave over the filet mignon with dark beer and gorgonzola cheese.
- Pros: diverse menu
its about great food...
by newdoc2003 at Citysearch
I agree the ambience of Cafe Allegro may not be top notch, but the food more than makes up for it. Top quality fresh ingredients, and refreshingly tasteful unique amalgamations make every bite enjoyable. The house salad with fresh raspberries, blackberries and goat cheese is simply a wonderful prelude to your meal. I recommend the Salmon in a lemon caper reduction sauce served with fresh sea scallop and mussels if available. The filet mignon with dark beer and gorgonzola is also a great menu staple. If you appreciate great food, you will love Cafe Allegro! The a la carte menu style can make your bill climb quite quickly once you add salad, soup, dessert, etc...
- Pros: great food, parking lot
- Cons: a la carte menu
