My experience in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Store (and how can you top a name like that?) was a treat. On walking in, the Nun who keeps the store and a customer (he seemed a regular from their conversation) were on their hands and knees looking for a Thomas Merton book (the bookshelf with the aesthetics were on the floor). A few jokes, a promise to sing with her next time he came into the store, the customer left and my husband and I had the undivided, but not overbearing, attention of the Sister...she knew where everything was, explained the book arrangement and was very helpful in choosing gifts for particular family members... This store has it all: medals, rosaries, crosses and crucifixes, books from childrens' saints' Golden books to a whole shelf of Jesuit materials. The Sister was affable, helpful and our half hour shopping there was a positive experience all around, right down to her "God bless you!" as we went out the door.

Pros: on-street parking good, ambience comforting, ask the Sister about singing

Cons: a bit jumbling of merchandise, but the Sister knew where everything was

It seems that no matter how many times I have been in there over the years or how many hundreds (my banker husband insists thousands, of dollars I have spent, there is something that happens that is an inconvenience to them. I have heard "MM" admonish a priest who accompanied me in to the store-that he did not have his cleric on. I am a Hospice nurse. I saw a sign that said ,"free scapulars". When I gently asked MM about these- she snipped "you didn't see that .....those are 1.50 or so. I did see the sign written per the Carmelite sisters asking that they (the scapulars) be distributed. I was admonished for giving a homeless man cash who was outside of the store.. MM said that this this would cause problems for her business. I have been quiet, tried to stay humble........but I cannot go back. I am sad about this as I am in constant need of sacramentals. I could go on and on but I'll stop here. Let us just pray that love and understanding and forgiveness will prevail on all sides.

Pros: many older periodicals and out of date books. beautiful older medals!

Cons: a feeling of being hurried. rude comments made-many have witnessed this
