This health club is very expensive and is a dump. Their machines are always broken and it is always filthy in there. They also say they are 24 hours but they aren't on the weekends and every time I have gone on a holiday the gym is never opened on time.

Pros: located right on walnut street

Cons: dirty, expensive, terrible maintenance

This gym had someone write a fake positive review full of marketing speak! Does anyone really call themselves a "young business professional"? Writing fake reviews says a lot about a place's judgment and business practices.

While X has updated their treadmills and some of their other equipment, this gym is not worth the money. The majority of the equipment is old, the male members of the gym constantly drop heavy weights and the staff does nothing about it even there is a policy not to. Now members are harassed to sign in before they use the equipment downstairs, which is a major hassle since it always a struggle to get a machine. They should invest in a scanning system on the first floor as well. There are better, more organized gyms in Pittsburgh to join.

Pros: location

Cons: everything else

Just joined 3 weeks ago and couldn’t be happier! “The X,” as I call it, is located right in the heart of Shadyside on Walnut Street. I am young business professional residing in Shadyside. X provides me with the convenience of working out morning or night just minutes from my house in one of the nicest, cleanest areas of the Pittsburgh. Plenty of state of the art equipment, clean locker rooms (very clean showers!), workout/stretching room, and even new cardio equipment with personal TVs attached. All the classes are free with membership and they even offer tanning. Their made-to-order health shakes are delicious and packed with protein as well as other optional supplements. I am unsure what gym the other reviewers have been complaining about…? I feel it is fair to say that X Shadyside is the most equipped, accommodating, and friendly gym to which I have ever belonged.

Pros: Clean, well maintained equipment. Amicable, freindly staff

Cons: only open till 6 on Saturday and Sunday

I agree with the other posts. Other than location, there is no reason to go to this gym. It is cramped, it is NOT 24 hours, it is dirty (tape holding the broken mirrors, etc.), there are not many machines and the ones they have are old and run down. As I mentioned, the place is so small and beat up that it goes without saying that there are no pools, courts, punching bags, or anything else you might expect for the price. I strongly recommend you look another direction for a gym.

Pros: Location

Cons: Everything

I am a reluctant member of this gym because it is 2 blocks from my house. Otherwise, it is an absolute dump. It smells. It's often 100 degrees inside and stuffy. I don't go near the disgusting locker rooms. There are never enough machines for the sheer volume of members who go there. Take a book, because you'll sit around for an hour waiting for a machine to open up, regardless of the time of day. Half the machines are broken. You can't see the TVs from the machines. Even if you can see them, there's no volume. The weight room is dominated by musclehead steroid goons dropping enormous weights on the floor and shaking the whole place, pacing around with menacing demeanors, posing in the mirror, etc. I've belonged to other gyms in other cities and paid less for much, much nicer accomodations. This place is so cramped it's ridiculous. There is enough room in the tiny far corner for one person to do crunches. And you'll be doing them under the feet of some muscle head doing squats while he's roaring and grunting. No swimming pool. No basketball courts, racquetball, squash. And the "24 hour" thing is a joke, too. They're closed by 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays, and by Noon on even the most minor holidays. At least you can go there at 3:00 a.m. on a Tuesday night!

Cons: It's overcrowded, dank, sweltering

I have been a member of this gym for more than one year, and I belive it's gotten worse. It is NOT clean. Everything is cramped and run down. Two treadmills have been out of commission for days. There are often temperature issues. In the summer it was a furnace. There is poor ventilation which makes everything extra extra stinky. The upstairs weight room is dominated by roid ragers who slam their weights on the floor (which you can hear by the way while you're downstairs using cardio.) There is no availability of machines. I was there last night at 8:30 p.m. and had to wait. I was there today at 6 a.m. and had to wait! There are TVs that are positioned horribly so that you get a cramp trying to watch...not to mention that you have to read the closed captioning because there is no audio! I have belonged to five different gyms in my lifetime in different cities, excluding university facilities, and this is the worst experience I have ever had. The staff is not friendly at all. When I inquired last night as to the status of the broken machines, I was greeted with a blank stare. This place simply takes advantage of its location, and sadly, that's why I am a member. It's location is super convenient. I can only hope that with all the development going on in the East End, some shop will come along and kick their a** with a spacious, clean, bright gym.

Pros: location

Cons: everything else, NOT 24 hrs--closes at 6 p.m. on Sat. and 5 p.m. Sun.
