Richard is an all-round pro. He has the knowledge, skill and sense of style of a top-notch NYC stylist. Orig. from Pgh, I've lived in NYC and now Miami, and Richard's the only person I'll let cut my curly hair other than my stylist in NYC. He knows exactly what will look best on you, and he will give you a cut that grows in perfectly. He is also a pro colorist. You can sit back and relax when you're in his chair. SIMPLY SAID, HE IS SIMPLY FABULOUS. Great pedicures and the hippy chick who does massage there is also very nice and talented.

Pros: Richard, Richard, Richard!

Cons: only one Richard to go around!

I've been going to Dean of Shadyside for a few years now, and I love them. The cuts are incredible and while they maybe expensive by some pittsburgh standards, I think they are quite affordable. And the cut that you'll get here is worth the price. The stylists are great at offering advice about styles that suit your face and your lifestyle; they don't push products down your throat; they are always 100% unpretentious. I've also been to Dean for manicures, and for whatever reason the polish seems to last much longer than at other places I've been (maybe the heat lamps? maybe the quality of polish?). Everyone is always polite, and I genuinely feel good about myself every time I leave there.

Pros: great stylists

Great salon, I have been going here for about a year now, and have tried 2 different stylists there. I have hard to style CURLY hair and have always had great cuts. Last week I convinced my boyfriend to come with me to get his hair cut and he absolutely loved it. The prices are good for Shadyside, better then Capristo salon on Ellsworth Ave. The costumer service was great and the place had a comfortable atmosphere so I didn't feel it was too pretentious. I strongly recommend for both men and woman!!

Pros: Free parking and great costomer service

Cons: none

I've been going to Dean of Shadyside for 2 years now which has added up to about 5-6 haircuts and one color. The people were very friendly and helpful. I was very unsure about whether to get low lights in my hair and had no idea how to pick out the color, but I knew I wanted something different. The stylists took time with me to choose a color I was comfortable with and explained how the coloring process works and what I can do if I didn't like it. It turned out fabulous and I've not yet been dissapointed with a haircut. A bit pricey...that's true, but it's worth it if you value good hair care.

Pros: customer service, experienced personel

Cons: price (depending on your hair-care budget)

Unless you are a 50+ year old woman seeking to look like you're a spry 40, avoid this salon at all costs--the high cost (in dollars) of looking a lot older than you are. Each "stylist" is pretentious enough to have their own assistants, assistants who expect to be tipped for standing around gathering tips on how to give a horrendous haircut. While my "stylist" was butchering my hair, he babbled incessantly about all of the fabulous places he had worked and all of the "precision cutting" skills he had learned instead of letting me get a word in about how I wanted to look. When he wasn't talking about himself, he was asking his "assistant" about the next client. It seemed to me that my "stylist" was far more concerned about who was coming in next (also a 50+ year old woman) than 20-something me. I went in for a shaggy pixie cut -- I left looking like Prince Valiant. (see this Sunday's funny pages for visual reference) After crying about it, I went to JC Penney's salon in Robinson. Ask for Carol, she has experience fixing other stylists' mistakes.

Pros: It was close to home.

Cons: Everything
