Pipers is a great British, er... Irish, er.... British...Well your guess is a good as mine, Has mainly British menu items and a great selection of beer and single malts. Food is pretty good for hearty British/Irish fare and the atmosphere is great. Loved the fact there the music is understated, reminds me of being back home in London where Pubs are places to chat, meet friends and have a laugh without competing with loud Techno shite. So far my number one choice for Pittsburgh Pubs.

  • Pros: Good Beer, Good Food, Not excruciatingly loud
  • Cons: Is it a British or Irish Pub....Who cares

Piper's Pub has a great selection of wonderful food and an even better selection of drinks. Only one major draw back not enough music.

  • Pros: Great family place
  • Cons: Not enough music

The complaints against Piper's Pub tend to be that it is crowded and smoky. So - the county voters are tkaing care of the smoky part, and the crowded part is because this is a cool place with good food and good beer. They also have a good whiskey/scotch selection by most accounts, but I'm not enough of a scotch drinker to know.

What you will not get at Pipers is a cheap beer and a lot of room for your friends. Many nights you are forced to snuggle up to strangers in order to fit, and the beer is $4-5 a pop. The beer prices ar not high, though, because of the quality of beer you are drinking. If you get a chance to get a table, do so, and enjoy some of Pittsburgh's only genuine English pub fare. It's pretty good, and I recommend the Toad In The Hole.

  • Pros: Great beer, good food
  • Cons: Crowded

In Short
The pictures of historic abbeys along the walls and a green tin ceiling overhead help give Piper's Pub the look and feel of an authentic Celtic tavern. The pub also attracts local bagpipers who come to watch soccer games broadcast via satellite dish on the telly. College kids and middle-aged adults have plenty to eat while imbibing their pints of Guinness, as the menu features shepherd's pie, bangers and mash, and fish and chips.

Food here is definitely worth a try. Some traditional American food, but the Irish/Scotish dishes are what really makes things stand out. They have a Sunday morning brunch featuring those dishes. Great for something different.

As for a bar, not bad. Great selection of beer.

I have been to Piper's several times, usually on weekends. While I did in fact read the reviews of some other patrons, I must say that all of my experiences have been great. First, the Scotch selection is phenomenal, especially for a South Side pub, and the prices aren't bad either. Single malt Scotches that easily go for 8-10 for a shot at other places are 5-7 at Piper's. One of the bartenders (Josh), is always right there when you need a drink, and he's always very friendly. If you go on a weekend, stop in slightly before 11 p.m., as they open up the tables in the restaurant for bar patrons at 11 and you can always get a seat. Get there after 11:30 and plan on standing.

  • Pros: Atmosphere, Scotch selection
  • Cons: Parking, Crowded on weekends
