A reconstructed bit of local history.. The History
The natives probably would prefer that you didn't know this, but British General John Forbes once referred to the troops at Fort Ligonier as an "extremely bad collection of broken innkeepers, horse jockeys and Indian traders." Regardless of General Forbes' opinion, Fort Ligonier withstood a 1758 attack by French and Indian forces, and was the only Western Pennsylvania fort never taken by an enemy.

The Structure
The original fort lasted from 1758 through 1766 and was built as part of the effort to retake Fort Pitt, which had been nabbed by the French and re-named Fort Duquesne. The current Fort Ligonier is a full-scale recreation, and is considered to be the finest of its type. The modern museum tells the story of the fort quite well through audio and video as well as exhibits and dioramas. The fort also is home to frequent battle re-creations, and the popular Fort Ligonier Days take place in October. Combined with Idlewild Park and the lovely small town of Ligonier itself, Fort Ligonier makes a fine day trip or weekend destination.
