Editorial Review for Sunnyledge Boutique Hotel – by Gayot.com

The Scene
With its dignified red brick facade, complete with turret, this building looks as if it belongs in the English countryside. It was built in 1866 for the founder of the Shadyside Hospital; artwork by his oldest daughter adorns the library walls. For visitors to nearby medical facilities, the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, this makes a nice (and reasonably priced) alternative to the chains in the area.

The Details
There are just eight bedrooms and suites whose decor boldly goes for an eclectic blending of patterns. For example, in one room, you'll find a plaid bedspread, striped chair and floral wallpaper. What could be busy actually works quite well. The result is fresh and classic at the same time. Amenities include phones and cable TV, as well as such hotel standards as hair dryers and twice-daily maid service. The inn is home to a full restaurant, which is open to the public. Breakfast is available only to guests. During the summer months, morning meals may be taken on the verandah overlooking Millionaires Row. The Club Room is notable for its inlaid glass bar top.

Title: Sunnyledege won our hearts Having traveled quite abit in the United States I realize that European tastes and North American tastes as they relate to hotels are somehwhat different. I believ howver that Sunnyledge in Pittsburgh PA transcends the continental divide in terms of hotel taste. While the rooms are not huge they are in fact quite cozy and charming. The beds are very compforatble with goose duvets. The chef prepared raisin oatmeal cookies with turn down service were a nice touch. The staff was very friendly although it is obvious the hotle employs mainly college students from Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh. Some might prefer seasoned veterans but we were happy with a less stuffy and jovial concierge and front desk staff which were quite good at making dining recommendations. Aside from our deluxe room we enjoyed the martini bar and restaurant. You Will love it.

Pros: lovely staff, luxurious room, delicious meals

Cons: bar closes too early

My Mother's Day was very dissappointing. We waited in the driveway until 4 pm with the entire 3 pm seating. When we headed to the buffet it way empty. They brought out one dish every 10 minutes or so and we had to wait and keep checking back. We were told that the beef and the quiche - in my mind the 2 main entrees of the buffet- were simply gone. The seating was so over crowded that the waitresses could barely fit by. I am so embarrased that I chose this as the place to take my mother for a special treat.
