Editorial Review for Le Mardi Gras – by Andy Mowrey
The Scene
Sitting at the bar, you expect to see Peter Lawford burst out of the men's room, followed quickly by the fists and heels of Sammy, Dino and Frank--especially if you have one too many of the expertly made highballs. A seemingly 360-degree mural of Mardi Gras high jinks--courtesy of a Carnegie Tech professor's $800 bar tab in the '50s--and plenty of necklaces made from cheap plastic beads make every day feel like Fat Tuesday.
The Draw
Starting life as a speakeasy, the tiny bar still has the look and feel of a private, after-hours social club. Its deep booths, low ceiling, haunting picture of the bar's founder and eclectic mix of clientele make you feel both at home and outside the familiar. Grapefruit and oranges are hand-squeezed on the bar for the freshest greyhounds and screwdrivers in the city.
