Stationed among upscale boutiques and eateries in the trendy shopping district of Shadyside, Prantl's is notable for its sinful candies, cookies and cakes--and its unbelievably low prices. The tiny takeout shop--nothing more than a small, box-shaped, clay-colored room with two pastry-filled glass cases--nearly bursts at the seams every morning with loyal customers who show up early to buy the freshest donuts, cheesecake, sourdough bread, and burnt-almond torte (the house specialty).

No longer the family business it used to be, but still a very good bakery. If you have your heart set on a favorite cake decoration, check with them carefully. They sometimes (apparently)don't have the same decorator and what you ordered before and loved may not be available or may not be recognized by the name you ordered it by before . Coconut snowballs are wonderful.

Their burnt almond tort is absolutely delicious, as are their little star-shaped butter cookies. BUT, things here are so expensive now! The bakery changed ownership and the prices have really skyrocketed. The little star-shaped cookies are not cheap for little cookies, especially because it would be easy to eat a half dozen alone! I really don't recommend their "normal" cookies, such as chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, etc - I have found them to be quite disappointing. Their cupcakes are good, but the two things that are truly spectacular are the burnt almond tort and butter star cookies.

This was the hit of the wedding at the Hyeholde. We have never seen a prettier wedding cake that tasted that good. It was so good tasting that many people went back for a seond (and third) piece. When was the last time you saw that at a wedding???
