The Scene
Located in Bloomfield, D'Amico's is just one of the restaurants that gives the area its international feel. The front of D'Amico's is a bar where people from around the neighborhood come to laugh and drink, but walk through to the back and find a family restaurant.
The Menu
A lot of love went into this menu, which features pasta and even salad dressing "made on the premises." The ingredients that go into the food is all authentic which is evident when it goes into your mouth. Most people will find any entrée on the menu beyond delicious. The shrimp pasta (the waiter's suggestion) is garlicky without being too pungent, filling but not heavy. However, watch out for the cannolis, which are stuffed with a lumpy trail mix ricotta concoction as opposed to the smooth sweet filling most Americans are used to.
The Service More Italian family than an Olive Garden commercial, when you're here, you're treated like one of the clan. With service that is super-friendly (but slow as your grandmother), the diner is quickly made to feel at home.

Great food, Gayle the waitress is outstanding, courteous and attentive, and friendly, but the owners are curmedgeons, no social skills and are standoffish or is it just me?

I have been going to D'Amico's for a dozen years or so. I have taken quite a few guests there and have gone with my workmates. Not once in all the times I've gone with other people have I heard anyone say they wouldn't go back. As a matter of fact, they did go back repeatedly. Sometimes without me! Ambience, there is none. Pretentiousness, no. The place to be seen, nah. A good place to eat, you bet. I defy anyone to have the walnut stuffed chicken (somewhere around #92 on the menu) and tell me that isn't about the best thing you've ever eaten in your life. Ask for the homemade spumoni at the end of your meal. The place and the waitstaff is a bit earthy and have character. I love it. You can keep the trendy bistros. I'm hungry. I think I'll head over there tonight.

Despites the Italian name of the place boldly displayed in large fonts at the entrance, maybe hinting at some authentic corner of Pittsburgh's Little Italy, its food is something even a modest canteen would be seriously ashamed of. Absolutely terrible! The bruschettas were a joke: the bread had not even been toasted! The pastas were much worse than that: no idea about cooking times, plus the sauce was probably drawn from some cheap can and heated up as is. My goodness! It could be honestly ranked amongs the worst places to eat in town. Not recommended at all!

Portion Size:
One of the few restaurants in Pittsburgh whose portions that aren't too big, aren't too small, but just right. The meals are filling, but leave you with enough room for dessert.
Family Fun:
Started fifteen years ago by husband and wife, Frank and Gilda D'Amico, the restaurant is still family-owned and family run. Don't forget to say hi to Frank, who can often be found behind the bar, serving up drinks and chatting up customers.
