Editorial Review for Enrico Biscotti Co – by Irina Reyn

The Scene
Entering this tiny, informal storefront is like gaining access to a vibrant, bustling Italian-American apartment. Antique furniture creates a pleasant domestic atmosphere, while dozens of exposed trays of freshly baked cookies signal a kitchen constantly at work. The homey interior is mirrored by the warm reception of the owners, whose invitation to try any of the staggering array of biscotti is impossible to resist.

The Food
Beyond the classic (flavored with anise), and a bittersweet chocolate one, biscottis here range from a pumpkin walnut that's firm and nutty with subtle accents of cinnamon to a moist apricot hazelnut in which citrus and vanilla flavors co-mingle smoothly. As for other cookies, the almond macaroon and the Milano are particularly noteworthy. The former's crisp exterior yields to a chewy, sweet center; the latter is half dipped in dark chocolate making it simultaneously airy and dense.

It's an institution, but so is Mama Leone's in Little Italy. Doesn't mean it's great. Or even very good. The aroma is sweet, but ask the better Italian restaurants and shops in town where they get their - more authentic - biscotti. Not at Enrico's. Not saying it's bad. But would agree on overrated. Time to move on.

Pros: smell

Cons: just ok

This is the most over-rated bakery in Pittsburgh selling biscotti. If you walk by the shop, the aroma is fabulous; but if you taste the 6 different biscotti, they all tatse the same...bland. I have never understood the fuss over this place.

Pros: Wonderful Aroma, Good Breads
