The Scene
There are no indoor tables; the lunch crowd stands elbow-to-elbow at long counters, sharing condiments and making small talk between big bites. Outdoor tables number about five on nice days.
The Food
In the retail area of their large warehouse, they have a fresh-cooked seafood counter. Their specialty is the fried fish sandwich, but they also offer a decent broiled variety. Ingredients are top-notch and couldn't be fresher. Customers can also pick up fried shrimp, fish hoagies and grilled swordfish sandwiches.
When to Go
Exceptionally popular for lunch, the line around noon can be long. Try to get there early or late. And watch out during Lent.

First time message: I just returned to the "burgh after an 10 year absence and headed straight for Benkovitz. The fried fish in a dish was cooked in dark brown fat that should have been thrown away days ago, had a thick mystery coating and was burnt. The other order, smelts, was cooked the same way but in addition, the smelts were so fishy tasting that they were inedible. Like so many things, the memory was better than the experience. The grease soaked through the plastic boxes and bags. Yuk!

For fresh fish, this is the best in the city. I've bought many different kinds of fresh fish here as well as their salads, and have always been more than satisfied. Isn't even any "fishy" smell in the place... I'm a huge fish sandwich fan too and this is still the best in the city that I've had. Gets crowded around lunch and the holidays, so watch out for that.
