The Scene
Once dismissed as unhealthy and too spicy, soul food is making a big comeback, and one of the better places to find it (though with limited hours), is in Wilkinsburg at the Soul
Food Connection. The Ghafoor family runs it in a friendly and efficient manner; it's a simple, clean place with a front counter and a few stools along the walls.
The Food
Most people take the food home or back to the office. The fried chicken is some of the best around, seasoned heavily with salt and pepper, served either straight or covered in homemade gravy. Salmon croquettes are also very good, large and filling. Collard greens in a tangy vinegar sauce lead the sides, as well as Hop 'n' John (black-eyed peas and rice). Mac and cheese is another good choice, and don't leave without a piece of the homemade peach cobbler.…
