Editorial Review for Gullifty's Restaurant – by Sam Edelmann
The Scene
A large movie marquee outside advertises RESTAURANT. Inside, a long bar area dominates the front, then opens up into a square two-story dining room, which is light and airy. Service is fast and efficient--infinitely more friendly and personal than most eateries in this price range. Diners will have a hard time missing the revolving carousel of desserts--the joint's specialty--as they wait to be seated.
The Food
Appetizers run towards bar food, plus garlic mussels and dip offerings. The artichoke garlic dip, served with Parmesan pizza chips, is flavorful; salads are large and varied, wiht 14 choices and nine dressings. All manner of sandwiches, burgers, and wedgies are here along with Mexican choices made with chicken, fish, lamb and beef. Gullifty's is one of the few dessert destination restaurants in Pittsburgh. The offerings are many and but the French strawberrry pie and deep-dish chocolate mousse pie are exceptionally good while the triple chocolate cake, uh, takes the cake.

Went for a Thursday late lunch. On the plus side, the French onion soup was delicious, full of warm, delicious cheese and tasty onions. And of course, the dessert was up to par with what would be expected, albeit quite pricey ($5 for a small sliver). The negatives, however, outweighed the positives. The service was lackluster; our server did not once check back to see how we liked the food, or to refill our drinks, during the entire service. The turkey sandwich was underwhelming--it tasted more like a McDonalds chicken patty. And, there was a hair in the steak and potato salad. If the server had actually come around, we would've been able to alert them to this. All in all, we paid $44 for a disappointing lunch for three. Pass up Gullifty's except for delicious (if overpriced) dessert.
Pros: dessert, soup
Cons: TERRIBLE service, hair in salad, bad sandwich

Gullifty's offers great food at great prices. Start with the matzoh ball soup or the artichoke spinach dip, and then try the meshuggnah or the potato pancakes. Believe it or not, they also have great chimichangas and pasta, and you can't beat the frnch onion soup. Leave room for dessert-my favorites are the chocolate intemperance or the french strawberry pie.
Pros: Consistently good
Cons: Parking can be tough, but it's Squirrel Hill
