HOLY CANOLI SOOOOO GOOOD!!!!.
Last night at La Cucina Flegrea was amazing. I usually never go out to eat Italian food in this town because I always end u disappointed! NOT THIS TIME!.
First it was very busy so it would probably be best if you called in a couple minutes ahead of time just so you don't have to wait.
Second the wine list that they have is truly Italian with a variety of very good dry whites and reds that you cant really find anywhere els.
Third, ALWAYS ODER THE SPECIAL. I had a Veal Chop it was huge, cooked in a pouch in the oven with fennel and white wine and something els i cant remember but it was a huge portion and every bit of it was eaten, the meat just melted right off the bone.
Fourth, My favorite part of the night was coffee and desert. I had a raspberry chocolate cream tart which i later found out was homemade by the head chef and owner. It was really good a true winner the chocolate just melted in your mouth, im drooling now just writing about it. The coffee I had was also amazing, nothing fancy just a simple black coffee but the roast was so good.
I would recommend this place to everyone and anyone who can appreciate real Italian food. This is a diamond in the ruff for Pittsburgh. The price and the wait is worth everything this place has to offer, One bite of this and you will never go back to Bravos or wherever. Really good food, and a really great night. Worst food in some time.
On the recommendation of a friends we tried this restaurant last week. It was one of the worst food experiences I can remember in some time.
When we entered there were only two other people eating so we expected good service. There was music playing in the background but it could not drown out the sound of screaming children in the kitchen.
We started with Calamari priced at $12.95. For that we expected something great. Instead we got what can best be compared to Burger King Onion rings only with less flavor and no sauce. Terrible.
I ordered a chicken dish and my girlfriend ordered a pasta. Mine came with salad and hers a soup. My salad was so over-drenched with a lemon sauce that I couldn't eat it. Her soup was bland and she didn't eat it.
When my chicken came out it was covered in lemon glaze and had been clearly overcooked. It was chewy and gross and I sent it back. She did not care for her pasta but I thought it was okay. I later became ill from the pasta.
In addition to the terrible food, the prices were ridiculous. I will never eat there again and would recommend you don't either if you care about flavor, your stomach, and your wallet.
Our favorite Italian restaurant. We have visited quite a few restaurants in Pittsburgh over time and especially enjoy a select few. To let you compare our tastes to yours, we list a few. For ethnic restaurants that serve food just like we have relished in the country they represent, we enjoy Max's Allegheny Tavern for German food, the Mediterranean Grill for eastern Mediterranean, Ka Mei for Hong Kong/Chinese, and Paris 66 as a French bistro. For countries we have not visited, we have based our opinions by comparing restaurants here and elsewhere serving the same cuisine and really enjoy visiting Abay for Ethiopian food, and the Lemongrass and the Balcony for Thai food. And finally, for restaurants that are excellent but not pure ethnic, we enjoy Legume Bistro, Point Brugge, the Cafe at the Frick (for lunch), Bona Terra and Monterey Bay. Anna's La Cucina Flegrea is absolutely our favorite for southern Italian food. To us, it is like being in Italy. We have eaten there repeatedly since it opened over a decade ago. The sauces are always made from fresh ingredients, and you can watch them cooking the food to order in the open kitchen as you enter. They can and will alter dishes to cater to food allergies. This restaurant has deservedly won the top county award for cleanliness. However, do not go there if you want pizza, cannelloni, and parmigiana. They are not on the menu. As you can imagine then, the earlier reviews we see for this restaurant bother us. Note none are recent. About three or so years ago, the restaurant suffered from having some really surly wait staff. We gave up going there regularly until these staff disappeared. But they did leave, the current staff are very enjoyable, and we are back to our favorite Italian restaurant.
Check on the price of the special before ordering.. Disappointed in the special. The service was adequate and the atmosphere very pleasant. Three in our party of four ordered the special entrée duck. The duck breast (two) were a bit overcooked, dry and chewy. The price of the special entrée duck was $34.95.
true Italian food with homey atmosphere. By reading the low rating a lot of customers gave La Cucina Flegrea it confirms what I always think: people just don't get it. One review said "go to the Olive Garden". Anyone who prefers the Olive Garden to this restaurant doesn't understand the food. People who want food like the Olive Garden want huge portions over- seasoned with garlic, all-you-can eat salad, etc. It's a shame so many people can't distinguish good food from a lot of food. Also, so many cheap people have discovered that at chain restaurants or big chain stores if they say something wasn't just the way they want it they can have a free meal - that's really pathetic! The atmosphere is supposed to be homey, like you are in their kitchen, hence pouring your own water. To all the people who tear down this restaurant I say, good, go to the Olive Garden so I can get a table more quickly at La Cucina; obviously you don't know good food when it is in front of your face.
THE BEST ITALIAN IVE EVER HAD!. This place is truley one of the best italian restraunts i have ever been to. The quality and savering taste of the wonderfuly prepared food makes your mouth water!. I have no idea why others have rated this restraunt so low but i found the food the service and the atnostphere to be exquisit! No complaints i really enjoyed the fealing the restruant gave off, "like eating on a fishermans dock" the smells from the kitchen were so good it made u want to try everything on the menu. For someone who lived in italy for much of my life i really felt like this was true italian cuisine and it took me back to italy. I rate this very high and will be eating there more often! Dont waste your tie at olive garden, the priceses may be much lower but you will find the quality of food no where els in pittsburgh!!
I went in with an open mind and hungry tummy. I had the mushroom ravioli and it was heavy and nothing to rave about. My friends and I each ordered something different, and agreed that it wasn't anything special.... Especially for the price we were paying.
The worst part about this experience was the service. For such a very very small place, one would think that you would be treated like you were in someone's home. The wait staff was flippant. talked too quickly. slow to serve/refill waters, seemed to disappear a lot, as we waited for 20 minutes after ordering our dessert to get ONE dessert onto the table.
Interestingly enough, the owner came out and asked a local celebrity how his food was, was there anything he could do for him, etc. and breezed by the rest of us.
I will not recommend this place, nor visit it again.
Bad Attitude ends our long relationship. AFTER being told by the wait staff (the owner didn't have the guts to come over) that my gristly, tough, ossobucco was how it should be, and too bad; we were presented with the $30 pricetag for this ill prepared entree. No apology, no price reduction, just a pleasant "I can't do anything for you" by our waitress. We have gone to what used to be our favorite neighborhood restaurant for the last time. It's strange, that even when the waitress recognized us as repeat customers when we came in, this did not register when a polite complaint went back to the kitchen. The short sighted, arrogant management has seen the last of our business. Too bad for them. With this kind of approach to customer relations, I advise others to stay away.
I can't believe restaurants like this exist... in a bad way.
After doing hours of extensive restaurant research, I was looking forward to trying a new restaurant. Well I could have picked any other restaurant and it would have been better than this place. This place consistently received high reviews for Northern Italian Cuisine. Let me list the things wrong with this place.
Service: Inexperience waiter (we had to pour our own water 2 times... when he told us the special of the day i will quote "we have this cod from greece.... i'm real excited about it" (in a monotone droning voice). We also had to direct him as to what to do next... like "This is the part where you ask if we need our plates taken... or now is when you should bring our entrees..."
Bread: disgusting, rubbery, seems like it hung out back all day. (shouldn't a high quality italian rest. that charges this much have edible bread?... maybe my standards are too high).
Food: Bland food for 30 bucks a plate? I would think that garlic and a little salt are rather inexpensive and they could maybe incorporate some into the cooking? Again my high standards fog my vision...
I've wasted enough time ranting about this place... In summary, don't go unless you want to throw away good money for bland unimpressive food that makes cardboard taste delicious. If that is the case... you can contact me... and I will cook up some cardboard (w/ garlic).
Horrible customer service, bad restaurant.. They had horrible customer service. Extremely rude and inconsiderate of their guests. I am appauled of the way they treat their guests and I would never reccomend this restaurant to anyone, I would rather starve than go to this dump.
