small place, bad attitude.
I used to really like their food, though I did not approve of their hygiene standards. But the man who owns the place completely turned me off with his bad attitude.
Taking out food from Zaws entails a 30-45 minute wait after placing the order. What is worse is that even if I placed an order for take out by phone and arrived 45 minutes later, I would still have to wait for another 30-45 minutes! Clearly, he wouldn't even start making my order till I got there. This happened to me not once, but on 3 different occasions. When I complained, the owner instead of being apoplogetic, was rude to me and even went to the extent of saying I SHOULD NOT ORDER HENCEFORTH IF I CANNOT WAIT!!!!
I have never been there since...good as though the food is, I would rather order from somewhere where people are nice to customers.
Would never recommend
Fresh Asian food.
This is a fabulous hole-in-the-wall takeout-only place; Pittsburgh seems to mostly have sit-down places with a take-out sideline. But anyway.
We've been buying food here since just after they opened. I've never been disappointed. Zaw's does all the standard Chinese-American dishes, but better/fresher than other places (get the Tso Chicken to see what I mean). You must try the non-Chinese specialties such as the curried Singapore noodles; take the time to explore the menu, you will be rewarded.
I do mean it about the "Chinese-American"; do not expect real Mainland food: also, be aware that this is a strictly stir/deep-fry and boil operation, not really the full range of Chinese cuisine.
Some people have mentioned that the place looks dirty.I agree it could certainly use more frequent steam-cleans, on the other hand I've never been sick from their food (unlike some other places in town).
The people running the place, Sonny, Marvin and Esther are amazing. Watching Marvin cook is a treat, Esther's knife work is amazing and Sonny always knows who you are ("I'll put in an extra fortune cookie for your son"). Eat there.
THE BEST CHINESE/BURMESE FOOD EVERRRR!!!!. EVERYONE THERE HAVE A GREAT HEART. THE FOOD IS GREAT BECOZ the CHEIF IS THE BEST N THEY COOK IT NOT FOR MONEY BUT FOR THE PPL TO ENJOY THEIR TRIDITIONAL FOOD. I WOULD GIVE THEM 10 STARS IF THEY LET ME....HOPE ZAW'S ASIAN FOOD WILL HAVE IT's 100th yr anniversary!!! LIVE LONG N GREAT FOOD 4 EVER!!!
Best Burmese style cooking around. On Southwest China/Burma/Southeast Asian standards, the restaurant is immaculate, but I would not normally eat anything from a kitchen that looked like that. That being said, it is the best Burmese-style food around. I have not had a bad take-out from here. Wonderful Chinese, Burmese and other Asian cooking.
Best Value, Great food.
Zaw's is the best and most reliable Chinese takeout place in the Pittsburgh area. But more than being a joint to get some cheap and quick grub, Zaw's offers outstanding, expertly prepared Asian cuisine.
I've eaten at Zaw's more than two dozen times, and I have never been disappointed in the quality of the food. The menu has incredible depth, offering food ranging from Japanese to Burmese to Chinese. There are many traditional Chinese restaurant mainstays (chop suey, chicken and broccoli), but also a number of items that you won't find elsewhere. and, each item is distinct, down to each individual lo mein dish.
The cost aspect deserves mention, too. Three people can get their fill for under $15. Scarcely an item is priced over $10. The service is friendly and helpful.
Don't go to Zaw's with a large crowd, looking for a sit down meal. There's only a counter seating up to six people, and one or two seats is usually filled. One or two can go in and sit down, but otherwise, take it home and enjoy.
Zaw's is one of the highlights of Squirrel Hill, and Pittsburgh at large. Don't miss it.
Great Prices???. Everyone always talks about what a great value Zaw's is, but I was not impressed. The food is good and the portion sizes are large, but when you walk in it's overwhelmingly dirty. The people are definitley nice, but I don't agree that it is a value at all. It is just as expensive as any other chinese restaurant where you can actually sit down and be served and not be grossed out by the filth
Great food!. Our favorite place for Chinese take-out! Their food is terrific, the prices are great and the people that own Zaw's are so very nice! One of my favorites is the Szechuan Beef, but everything we have ordered has been yummy!
Best Chinese Food EVER. We just had our first Zaw's experience and it was FANTASTIC. The best Chinese food we've ever had! I loved the Pork Lo Mein (with big piece of pork looking like they were fresh from a pork rib! YUM!) and the Singapore Rice Noodles was great too! Their egg rolls were at least 2 inches thick! We'll never go to a chinese buffet again!
It's not a restaurant, but people come to Squirrel Hill from all over to pick up Marvin Lee's exceptional Asian cuisine..
Zaw's is, in fact, a hole-in-the-wall place with a small counter and Marvin, standing five feet away performing furiously at the wok. Wife Esther cuts up ingredients while brother-in-law Sonny handles the counter and the omnipresent trill of the phone. The action is constant, and you'd best phone in your order or be prepared to wait.
The food ranges from all Chinese cuisines to Thai and Pacific Rim dishes. His hot-and-sour soup, made to order, is possibly the best in the city. The Singapore rice noodle is not to be missed, nor is the coconut shrimp and scallop. Of the Chinese dishes, the Mongolian Beef is a standout, and anything in satay sauce is worth a try. It's wonderful and exceptionally inexpensive. One of the best bargains in town.
chinese heaven. I tried Zaws for the first time and they have made a dedicated customer of me for years to come. The Chicken in garlic sauce was absolutel the best i have ever had
