The reason behind any cinematic activity in town..
As an educational institution, Pittsburgh Filmmakers offers a complete, accredited training program in film, video and photography for students at the University of Pittsburgh. Its main office moved several years ago to a converted industrial space on the extreme north end of Oakland, a block past the Graffiti nightclub. College students can get in on some cheap movie action by buying a $20 membership, which entitles them to five movies and five buckets of popcorn.
The Melwood Screening Room on the second floor runs a program of indepdendent fare, including animated and experimental films that would not otherwise be seen locally, with Tuesday's Film Kitchenspotlighting Pittsburgh-made film and videoattracting particularly high interest. One of the longest running and largest media art centers in the country, Pittsburgh Filmmakers also manages the Harris Theater Downtown and the Regent Square Theater on Braddock Avenue. If art openings with plenty of free munchies are more your bag, the Melwood Photo Gallery exhibits about a dozen shows a year, mostly by local artists.
