Editorial Review for Uncle Sam's Classic Subs – by Christian Pelusi
The Scene
Order from the wall-mounted menu and then take a seat with your number. The wait staff carries out the fresh-from-the-grill subs, calling out the numbers. Seeing the wares paraded around, in combination with the sound and smell of steak sizzling on the grill, makes the anticipation almost unbearable.
The Food
The Ultra Philly cheese steak melds American cheese (or provolone) and onions perfectly with the tender slices of steak. The soft roll allows the sandwich to virtually melt in the mouth. The special Italian sub, made hot, has two types of salami and capacolla heated nicely with just the edges lightly crisped. Both are surrounded with a generous helping of thin French fries. Any sub imaginable is available: from chicken cheese steaks and grilled portabello to tuna and Italian sausage. Uncle Sam's staff navigates the lunch crunch with seasoned ease. Take-out orders are bagged and shoved off quickly while patrons mill around until tables open up on either of two floors.

I recently went to Pittsburgh for the summer, and being a Philadelphia native, I was a little skeptical when people described Uncle Sam's cheesesteaks as "Amazing". I decided to give them a try. I had half of their famous cheesesteak and half of the Italian Sausage Sub. I must say I was not impressed with the cheesesteak, it lacked that Philly touch and I don't even think they had whiz! However, the Sausage Sub was very good and the fries complemented it well. I suppose the cheesesteak is an adequate substitute until you've had a real cheesesteak, and is likely the best in Pittsburgh. The other subs I tried while I was in the city were impressive as well.
Pros: Most of the subs, fries, quick service
Cons: Cheesesteak

Uncle Sam's (in Oakland) is my favorite place to get a cheese steak in Pittsburgh. The atmosphere is also fantastically old school and the portion of food is hearty. If you avoid the expensive soda you can stuff your face with amazing subs and fries piled high with Frank's and ketchup for under 6 or 7 bucks. Love this place. Some complain about the wait time but that is to be expected from a place that makes everything when you order it, nothing here is sitting around. If you don't have a lot of time to waste at lunch go a little bit before noon or around 1 to avoid the crowd.
