reliable, i guess..... the only benefit i can think of is that it's pretty easy to get a vehicle servicing appointment. aside from that, it's pretty clear that they inflate the price by adding additional, probably unnecessary work. the best move i made was switching from the pep-boys big box mechanic to a reliable shop in polish hill.

Terrible - Damaged My Vehicle/Completely Dishonest. When I went in for an oil change, I waited for about two hours. Finally, the staff member at the front desk informed me that my drain plug had fallen out and the oil spilled causing the delay (I don't know much about cars, so I didn't question this). Then, he said the oil change was free because of the long wait. I left without a receipt or new sticker, feeling pleased with the customer service and "complimentary oil change." The next time I went to have my oil changed somewhere else, I learned that my oil pan had been stripped and that there was a rubber plug in my oil pan. No other business would change my oil with the faulty plug. When I returned to Pep Boys, they claimed I had never had any services performed at their shop, and showed me that they had "voided" my transaction. They took my car to "look into the problem," then called me to say my oil change was finished, although that was not why I took the car into the shop. They attempted to cover up the record of their mistake. The managers declined liability for the damage. I hope to resolve the issue in small claims court, but the repair was estimated at $500 by my dealer. I am incredulous at the bad faith and poor service. Do not risk having your vehicle serviced here, even for something as small as an oil change.

Fraud. PepBoys Shadyside is a big fraud. I went their to get my power steering fixed. They charged $300 for a cheap "sub-standard" $70 pump which I later found as my car broke next day. Although I had paid $400 labor a couple of days ago, they said they can only give 50% discount on labor and full charge of replacing the hose connected to pump which was real problem rather than pump they had replaced for no reason. I was visiting from Baltimore, so I asked if you guys can call PepBoys there to have it fixed near my home. They said "NO" and gave my keys back. Extremely rude behavior!

Worst service, rip-off prices. I went to the Millvale Ave PepBoys to get a regular maintenance inspection on my car. My car had a couple of extra noises from the engine. I also wanted to get the centre rear view mirror attached - they just had to glue it back to the windscreen. The guy who took in my car was quite courteous and seemed knowledgeable. I told him do a regular maintenance (oil, filter change), inspect the noise problem, and also glue the mirror back. He estimated that gluing the mirror should cost something less than $10.

Later, they call and tell me that the car is ready to be picked up. I go to the counter and ask the clerk (a different one) if they figured out the source of the car noise. He didn't know anything about it at all. The mechanic hadn't looked into that! Then, I see that they had charged $18 for fixing the mirror. I didn't complain and I just paid the amount. However, upon entering my car, I found they hadn't fixed the mirror at all - it was lying where I had left it. I went back to the store, and the clerk told me some BS about why only the mirror base plate was glued to the glass and we have to wait 24hrs to fix the mirror to the base plate. The truth - they didn't even fix the base plate and it takes 15 min for the glue to set, not 24 hrs (It is called super glue for a reason). I showed him that they didn't fix anything, and got my $18 refunded. Then I went to Autozone, bought a mirror attachment kit ($3) and did it by myself.

To summarise, this PepBoys didn't fix half the problems I complained about. Their prices are rip-off (labour is $90 per hour!), and worse - they invoice your for things they don't do.
