You can tell this by the name, but the Mattress Factory was once an actual mattress factory. Inside, the space is very bare. This is in line with the necessities of the art, which is all conceived and produced on-site. Rooms for installation pieces among its four floors must start off like blank canvases.

The Experience
Then you'll naturally want to see it all, but be sure to spend the requisite 15 minutes in James Turrell's "Pleiades." You'll think nothing is happening and may not have the patience, but the end product is well worth the wait--that is, if subtle avant-garde installations of optical effects are your sort of thing.
