One of the respected pillars of Pittsburgh's drama community..
The Scene
Nestled close to some residences and industrial warehouses on a typically narrow street in the South Side, the red brick structure boasts a large anteroom and a foyer for receptions. The main theater itself has about 200 seats, each offering a perfect view of the six productions of current plays that its season offers--productions of the highest artistic caliber.
The Skinny
Right next to the building is its satellite, the Lester Hamburg Studio Theatre, where smaller productions are staged by a cavalcade of independent companies, and where the "Dark Night" series allows musicians, poets and performance artists to strut their stuff with variety shows once a month. City Theatre has brought dozens of shows to Pittsburgh, including several by Anne Bogart's Saratoga International Theatre Institute. Coming up this season are a few world premieres--in cooperation with its New Works on Stage series--and a stage version of David Sedaris' "The Santaland Diaries."
