The Scene – A funky mixture of little puffy clouds, brightly painted walls and mismatched furniture creates an eclectic harmony. A disco ball glitters next to a small crystal chandelier. The back room, decorated with tree branches, has an art-vending machine and four pinball games, and leads to a cozy courtyard. Wash down a bagel and biscotti with a strong cup of coffee, a banana smoothie, tea or a vegan soy hot cocoa. Cheap eats like pizza bagels and vegetarian salads provide light lunch. There's also a selection of tortes and cookies.

The Beehive is an experience from another realm. The decor is wild, some of it is retro, some modern, and all of it mismatched and whimsical. The staff are unconventional, and friendly. The clientele ranges from high school students to dotcom geek types who are there to play DDO. The coffee menu rivals that of Starbucks, but with a much more soulful feel. Due to governmental regulations, they no longer allow smoking, however the great atmosphere, and free wifi, more than make up for the nonsmokng policy. I highly recommend this place for anyone who is looking for an interesting place to hang out without spending much money. It's an idea place for a date, a study group, or for meeting strangers off the internet. Parking is problematic, but with a little persistence, it's doable.
- Pros: Cheap & delicious coffee, vivid atmosphere
- Cons: Non smoking, difficulty finding parking
Unique atmosphere, good food, free wireless

The Beehive feels like it belongs in some cyberpunk novel - the decour is irregular and wild (dentist and swing chairs sit among various "normal" ones and nothing matches), there's a variety of paintings on the walls, and various types of people meet up there. The food's good (not great, but pleasant), the tea selection is one of the best in town, and the employees don't look or act like corporate drones. It is a bit difficult to get there and back, especially late at night -- bus service along Carson is pretty good but access to other parts of the city is poor, and parking is very tricky. All lthings considered, the Beehive is my favourite coffeeshop in the city.
- Pros: Unique atmosphere, free wireless, internet terminals, non-corporate vibe
- Cons: Difficult to find nearby parking, possibly difficult to reach by bus
