Editorial Review for Tuscany Cafe – by Frances Monahan

The Scene
Funky and unique artwork from LaFond Galleries on the South Side, most of which is for sale, decorates this amply sized coffeehouse, which at one time used to be a five-and-dime. Typical South Side architecture abounds--tin ceiling, hardwood floors, suspended ceiling fans and high-up windows. The house is dimly lit, with twinkling suspended track lighting. Wood-paneled walls lend a rich feel to the ambiance, contrasting nicely with playful checkerboard upholstered cafe chairs and some of the artwork.

The Food
The coffee, particularly the mocha bianca (white mocha), is terrific. This place is also a deli. Try the Toscano, their most popular sandwich. It's a grilled chicken breast with sundried tomatoes, fresh mozz, lettuce and honey mustard. They also bake their own muffins and scones. Your average joe searching for a coffee fix is apt to go midday. At night you'll have a fine mix of college students doing work. Young people will show up Saturday morning in their pajamas, and at night, you get the fun people all decked out. If you're into "Will & Grace," there's a viewing party here every Thursday at 9pm, and it does get crowded.

every time i go there, the employees are very friendly and cordial with me. i usually end up starting up conversations with them even thought i normally shy away from doing so with strangers. i've even gotten a free cup of coffee now and then (DON'T TELL THE MANAGER!!) it's a very laid back/friendly atmosphere and i feel very comfortable there.

Almost every time I've been here, the staff was pretty cold and borderline rude! On my first visit, my friends and I got settled in our seats before heading over to the bar. An employee had the nerve to come over and rudely ask "if we planned on ordering anything"??? We had only been sitting there for no more than 10 minutes! The other times, I watched the manager be a complete jerk, not only to customers but to his own staff!! Next time I'm on the Southside, I'll go to Starbucks!

Pros: free internet, cool decor, decent coffee

Cons: lousy customer srvc., unfriendly staff

Possibly the only high-class coffee joint in town where it's OK to stop by in your pajamas.  See the full editorial review.
