Editorial Review for Smokin' Joe's – by Tatiana Zadony
The Scene
Like most narrow bars in the South Side, Smokin' Joe's has a three-sided bar facing massive beer coolers and an assortment of liquor. Three old-fashioned belt fans whirl overhead, and mirrored beer advertisements cover the walls along with photos of industrialized Pittsburgh. Beyond the bar is a seating area and a pool table leading to the upstairs bar used on busy nights.
The People
Smokin' Joe's doesn't have a stereotypical customer. Two girls gossip in the window tables and a couple, toting laundry, sit at the bar. A bunch of men stare blankly at the football game, breaking their gazes long enough to order another beer or to argue about a play. Weekends are busy with a large college crowd.
The Drinks
With a whopping 50 beers on tap and 250 beers in the coolers, experimentation is a must. Varieties include Guinness, Franziskaner and Paulaner, plus an impressive array of domestic beer and microbrews.

The only reason to go to Smokin' Joe's is to drink beer. They don't have a particular well-stocked liquor bar otherwise, and the food is pretty average barfood fare that is not worth mentioning. The selection of beer, though, is spectacular and makes this bar a real standout on the South Side. The draft selection is pretty good, but the real treat is the huge row of coolers behind the bar hiding what must be hundreds of beer varieties. Whatever you might crave, it seems, is to be found. From Negro Modelo to Baltika to Chimay to Dogfish Head. It's all there, and the prices are pretty good too compared to what you'd pay at other joints on Carson Street.
Pros: Beer beer beer beer beer
Cons: Aside from the great beer selection this bar doesn't cut the mustard

This place has a wide variety of wonderful beers on tap. The Double IPA was a treat. They make a decent, but not great, plate of wings. Despite ordering the hottest sauce, it was pretty mild. This place is comfortable, neatly decorated, and the staff is friendly, this is my choice to replace Chiodo's, which beer lovers of Pittsburgh over a certain age will always miss.
Pros: Great beer, wide selection
Cons: Food is so-so
