Tips for Mario's South Side Saloon

This place is ok. Do not try to get in with a out-of-state id. The bouncer said he "did not like" my friend's California id and would not let her in.

Dont clean there glasses. I went there on a Wednesday Night for goblets and my glass had lipstick on it. I told the bartender and all he did was wipe the lipstick off the glass and gave it back to me?? are you serious??

Mario's South Side Saloon, Pittsburgh. I was a while ago in Mario's, forgot my very expensive leather jacket. I called and talked to one of the co-owners (Patty Beck) and she told me it was not there. Hmmmm-a few weeks after that I saw HER wearing it, getting on her motorcycle....I will never go there again!

Used to be a fan - then had a HORRIBLE experience.... Mario's used to be one of my favorite places on the southside... I used to highly recommend this place to friends - this was even a place I would make sure to bring visiting friends to while they were in town. Yesterday that all changed.

I went there for a late lunch with friends who had never been there before. We proceeded to wait approximately 20-30 minutes before our waitress showed up at our table. She was extremely rude during the initial taking of our order. It then took about 20-30 minutes to recieve simple fried food. Had the restaurant been busy - I would have been much more understanding about this - however, there are not many tables in Mario's & few of these tables were full. This is not the main problem that we encountered during our visit.

After eating our food, during which time we only saw our server once & she never asked or tended to our drinks at all. It took 30 minutes for us to get our server's attention just to ask for the bill. Another 15 minutes went by for her to take the money. She brought back the wrong change, which would be a simple mistake - except she all but threw the money at us & by the time we realised that it was wrong - we had to flag down another server to get the correct change. We asked for a manager at this point but were told that he was not there. This entire time, we were treated like trash. After finally getting our correct change, we left the restaurant thinking that would be the end of the experience.

The little change that we left on the table, the waitress - upset at not receiving what she wanted for a tip - followed us out onto Carson Street & proceeded to throw the money at us. After turning around & heading back into the bar - we finally spoke to the unsympathetic manager (apparently he was there). While I applaud his support of his employee, his refusal to acknowledge the horrendous service and harrassing actions of his employee has soured my view of Mario's and I will never return.

Never changes. I first came to Mario's on my 21st birthday, which was 11 years ago. Off and on, I have visited Mario's on several occasions. It never changes. These guys do a great job. I agree, they must be doing it right with how the bars come and go so quickly in the South Side.

Full and half yards of ale, goldfish bowls and miniature toilets.. The Skinny
The above are just a few of the different containers in which drinks are served at Blue Lou's and Mario's. While many get a kick out of the notoriously childish ways in which to enjoy grown-up beverages, these popular meeting places are serious about drinking and having a good time. Connected by a large, and ironically appropriate hole in the wall--important considering Pittsburgh's notoriously finicky weather--the two bars are located at the heart of drinking in the South Side.

The Scene
While it seems at times to be a frat party just about out of control, it never quite redlines and the fun always manages to stay safe and legal. Great drink specials appear throughout the week and are available on a handy monthly calendar free for the taking. Don't forget to order some of the better-than-average bar food and appetizers.

Great place great people. I have been in Pittsburgh for 6 months, Mario's has been there for years. It is not easy to survive with the 70+ bars there are on the South Side. Mario's has done it by having amazing bartenders and wonderful management. The service is respectable and the management is tough. These guys have been doing this a long time, they deserve an applause.
