Try Here First! Better than California. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, than relocated to LA... Strange thing was I was expecting to find all this great Mexican food on the west coast, when In actuality I found myself missing El Campisinos It's true Folks... The closer you get to Mexico, it doesn't get any better!!! I found out that so many places are about the "Hustle" and not about the quality. In Pittsburgh, this is as close as your going to get to authentic without travelling across the border yourself. Mind you all Mexican food in America is Americanized ~ But here you will get the most original elements available. Particular things I would like to note are the combination fajitas (Bien Cosidas) which means "cooked well done"~ it's big enough for two people, and the Tamatio Salsa ~great on steak/meat (ask for it). They also cook the tortilla chips at the beginning of everyday unlike other places that get them precooked in bags. Eat up, and take my word for it ~ don't take it for granted, great mexican food is hard to find... even in California!
The Best Damn Mexican Food EVER!. I have been eating here for years. I was a little reserved the first time, but after that, I was hooked. The food is homemade and nothing beats it. The service is friendly and quick. I get the chicken burritos and a side of rice. I've tried other things, but that is my favorite and it's delicious every time. I've eaten at Mad Mex and Cozumel and they do not come close to El Campesino. Great food, great service, great price! What more could you ask for!
Not to swift. I had ordered the Special to try several things. The little round thing was very good, but that was the only food that was. The hamburg was DRY with NO taste. I thought you could get chicken. For 11.95 for the meal I expected to possibly like it. The rice was also very DRY there. The chips and salsa were excennent as well as my Fried Ice Cream. I will go back there Just for the fried Ice Cream. Odoba up the road had a much better Burrito for my husband and was less expensive too.
Real Mexican. Probably the best non-corporate place to eat in the city.
The food and the staff are great here. It has been a while since I have been to Mexico - but I never forgot what the tastes like!
I have not had a Margarita yet (yes they are serving!) but I hear they are fantastic. Chi Chi's was fresh from the freezer to the fryers and microwaves. Don Pablos has great fajatias. Mad Mex is all about California.
El Campesino es muy bueno!
Great food!. I'm from LA where great mexican food lurks behind every corner. Can't really say that about Pittsburgh. But among the places I've tried here, this comes the closest. The food is as authentic as it gets in the Burgh. It's very reasonably priced. I go there everytime I get an itch for great Mexican. Also great for large groups and kids. The only drawback is that they need a liquor licence to start dishing out the margaritas. But at least you can bring your own which I recommend.
Close as you get. I lived in San Antonio, Tx Where I got the oppurtunity to get to know what authentic Mexican food can be like. I loved it. Before Elcampesino came I couldn't find anything close. My search has ended. Thier food and variety is better that any others in authenticity, quality, price, and quanity ( I always need a doggy bag). Try and enjoy.
Best Mexican in Pittsburgh. After trying several lame "Mexican" restaurants in Pittsburgh, we stumbled on to El Campesino. THis is dirt-cheap, delicious Mexican food. Pretty authentic, great chiles and chicken and BYOB. If you are searching for Mexican, look no further.
Poor food. One day I was given guacamole that was substandard. The avocado was clearly underripe. When I asked for an explanation, I was told "No, the avocado's weren't ready, but we served it anyway, because you ordered it" I told them I would not pay for anything this poor. I also complained about the continuing poor quality of the salsa, and was told "That's how it comes out of the can". A Mexican restaurant that can't make its own salsa is beneath contempt. I have not returned since.
A Texan On Mexican. The Mexican food here is different from I am used to having recently moved from west Texas and eating Tex-Mex all the time. I don't like chain restaurants Mexican food very much, I prefer the smaller, family owned type places and this restaurant only has four locations across Pittsburgh. The Monroeville location is the kind of small "hole in the wall" location being in a strip mall, which is fine with me! The red enchilada sauce is somewhat sweet, the salsa mild, the restaurant itself small with little waiting time though it was full to the brim when we went, not too noisy for the size. The salsa, chicken enchiladas, chicken burrito, or beef enchilada are all reccommended.
