Editorial Review for El Campesino – by Sam Edelmann
The Scene
The dining room is simple, with little decoration. People don't come here for ambience, but rather for good Mexican food in large quantities at low prices.
Mexican Meal
El Campesino specializes in tacos, tostadas and burritos. Everything is made fresh, and there is nothing skimpy anywhere. The homemade salsa served with chips is very good, and be sure to ask if they have salsa verde, a hotter, tomato-free version of the traditional dip. Fajitas are excellent here, especially the chicken, with large amounts of fixings served on the side so you can build your tortilla as you see fit. The cheese enchiladas are also worth recommending, as well as the delicious homemade flan for dessert.

I first went to this restaurant about 3 years ago and remembered it as being very good, as close to authentic as it could be here in PA, Mexican food. I'm not in this area of town often and had the opportunity to have lunch at El Campesino a couple of days ago. I don't know if the food quality has really gone downhill, or if I remember the food as being better than it really was, but we went with another couple and we all were disappointed. The food was truly uninspired. The sauces were bland and thin, the enchilada, burrito, and taco fillings just drive-through restaurant ordinary, there were frozen mixed vegetables in the rice (!), even the obligatory chips and salsa were not very good (the salsa think and watery, the chips greasy). Even the more "special" entrees, a cheese-stuffed chile poblano and a meat-filled chile relleno , were blah. What has happened? Well, whatever it was, we won't be returning. I can do better at home with a can of tomatillos, some chicken, a bunch of cilantro, and a package of commercially-made tortillas! If you don't really know what Mexican food is like, you probably will like this restaurant. But if you want really good, authentic Mexican food, buy a good cookbook (any of Rick Bayless') and stop by Reyna's in the Strip for groceries.
Pros: menu prices
Cons: just about everything else

Awesome food. I've been to all of the El Campesino locations but the Monroeville location takes the cake. Everything on the menu is fantastic. Enchilada and burrito sauces, salsa, and refried beans are some of the best I've ever had. Super fast service. If you're worried about authentic, some of the employees barely speak English! All the employees ARE authentic. The only down side is this location is BYOB, if that's something you're worried about.
Pros: Lots of food for the $
Cons: BYOB
