The home of the founder of the modern environmental movement.. The Skinny
Rachel Carson's 1962 book, "Silent Spring," launched an entire generation into a previously unknown wave of consciousness regarding the inter-dependency of living things on earth, and is considered by many to be one of the most important books ever written. Much of Carson's respect for nature came from spending her youth on the five-room farmhouse in Springdale. Today, the house is a National Historic Site, and visitors can tour the house and grounds. In addition, classes and workshops on environmental issues are held at the Homestead--continuing the work begun over a quarter-century ago by one of the most influential women of the 20th century.
