Editorial Review for Round Hill Park & Farm – by Frances Monahan

The Skinny
Round Hill Park and Farm in Elizabeth Township is just a few minutes from Pittsburgh. With 1,100 acres, the park offers an exhibit farm (a working farm open daily), a model airplane field, a visitors center and a bridle grove. You'll see all the animals you would see at any farm--cows, pigs and chickens--and visitors are permitted inside the barns. Pavilions offer nice spots for a picnic lunch and playgrounds are available for children. Feed the ducks, but don't feed the other animals. In spring, it's sheep-shearing time, and an event is open to the public. In December, it's time for the blessing of the animals. Bring your pets (even horses) to this event, sponsored by the Humane Society. Hot chocolate and cookies are served after the blessing.

This Spring, my family and I had the rare and beautiful opportunity to witness the births of two calves and six piglets at Round Hill Farm. What's even more remarkable about the event is that it didn't require any special reservations or arrangements. It was simply the result of being "at the right place at the right time". No staff person shuffled you out of viewing range. What a joy to behold! I look forward to seeing the new lambs who are due any time now.

Pros: FREE, great parking, close to main highway

It's like going to a zoo in that you get to see all kinds of animals. They have a duck pond for kids to feed the ducks. There are picnic groves and playgrounds too. It's absolutely free. Your kids get to see a real working farm.

Pros: Free, good for families
