Delicious and well priced Chinese Food!.
First, I want to say that the owners here at green bamboo or some of the most hospitable, comical, and generous people that I've run into in a while. What I mean by 'generous' is that you can pretty much expect a good heaping order of delicious homemade Chinese food!
The location is in a weird spot on the next street to the right of Children's Hospital and when you actually find the place its a very small and unassuming restaurant, so eating with a large family may not work...however, if your bringing a friend are a spouse, or on the go--the food here makes a big impact for such a small place! You must try the General Tso chicken!
Great new option for hospital employees!!.
I love oriental food. Sushi, Thai, Szechuan, pho, you name it, I like it. I eat a LOT of it.
That being said, Green Bamboo, the newest Chinese offering the Bloomfield/Lawrenceville area of Pittsburgh is amongst the best I've tasted in quite a while.
I ordered the General Tso's chicken, a good "safe" first order for a new restaurant. I was very pleasantly surprised!! The chicken was cooked perfectly - not a single tough or stringy piece, as is prone to happening in just about every Chinese take-out I've ever ordered from. The sauce was tangy and sweet, without being so spicy that I had to stop and chug my drink to quench the fire (I'm sure they can make it that way, but since I just ordered it as listed on the menu, my opinion is that this was done right).
The one gripe I do have is that I asked for white rice with my lunch box, and they mistakenly gave me fried...I can understand the mix up a little bit, but be sure to be clear what you want when you order, and this shouldn't be a problem.
I also tried their steamed chicken dumplings, which I'd never heard of before. They were very large, and very tasty!! I still prefer pork, but this is what I kind of imagined a chicken dumpling would taste like!
The egg roll was nothing too exciting, but was what you'd expect with a Chinese meal. I cant be sure, but my speculation is that they do not make their egg rolls fresh in-house...but that IS speculation.
The price was actually one of the biggest highlights of the meal. Barring the dumpling add-on, you can get a 'Lunch Box' meal, consisting of one of their many entree items, a side of white or fried rice, and an egg roll OR can of soda for $5.95 plus tax. In a time when gasoline is nearly $3.50/ga, filling up your OWN tank for just $5.95 is a definite plus!!
Thank you, Green Bamboo, for the delicious and satifsying lunch. We'll be seeing each other again soon!!
