I am originally from Arnold, PA, home of the Mazziotti Bakery. I have been eating their bread for over 50 years. I will admit that when the original owners went into retirement, the baking changed. With that said, the guys that are running the place now have finally got it together.

If you don't know Mazziotti Bakery, you have to make the trip to New Kensington. I am of the opinion that there are 3 fabulous Italian breads in Pittsburgh. They are: "the twist" from Mancini, "peasant Italian" from the Breadworks and my favorite "the LARGE Italian" from Mazziotti. "The LARGE Italian" is bigger than both of the other loaves (it is so big that they sell it in a large shopping bag). And for $4.25 a loaf, it is a "bargain". As for the flavor and texture.....I am not a professional taster, so you are just going to have to get a Mazziotti "the LARGE Italian" and judge it yourself.

Also, they make some other "really LARGE doughnuts" and pastries for you to try as well.

If you are a lucky person.... The bread and rolls at this bakery are pretty good. That is..... If you happen to be one of the lucky customers that gets a loaf or bag of buns that were baked that day. All too often, when there is an abundance of bread and rolls left over at the end of the day, it is bagged up and placed in the freezer. Before the beginning of the next business day, it is pulled from the freezer and placed on the rack waiting to be sold to some poor unsuspecting customer. At $3.00 for a small loaf, and $4.00 for a large loaf, that is a pretty rotten thing to do to a customer. Believe me..... Nicola and Carmella Mazziotti would roll over in their graves if they saw how their bakery is being run these days! I can tell you this from first hand knowledge. I was a baker there!
