Service not good at all. – I was surprised that I placed an order and came back in 15 minutes to no remembrance of an order being placed...I waited patiently while people who came in behind me were treated like they were part owners..Was it a case of like discrimination? Others were offered something to drink while they waited..I waited almost an hour..They had recently sat down...I was offered nothing.(No apology was issued and the food was cold..I work 2 blocks from the place....As a professional who happens to be a minister (big Bible as you enter)..Show love to all especially those of the household of faith.
Big Mamma is the bomb! – As I waited for my lunch one hot summer day, an elderly woman popped her head in the resturant door to say "hello" to Big Momma. Big Momma looked up and instantly stopped what she was doing, went to the freezer, pulled out a delicious-looking large frozen orange freeze pop, went to the door -- hugged her elderly friend and neighbor and handed her the freeze pop. I thought that was so sweet. My food was sooo good that day and her compassion for that elderly woman made the food taste even better! I love you big momma!
I had a bad experience! =( – Prior to my visit, I've heard good reviews so I thought to myself," I'm so going to love this place." Not so! I went to the restaurant at 11:30 AM and after viewing the menu, I asked for a fish sandwich (yeah, the one they claim Hines Ward loves); and was told, "We don't have that today." I said ok, "How about I go for the wings." Dude says, “We don't have that either today.” Seriously...what soul food restaurant doesn't have chicken wings? However, they did have pork, which I don’t eat. I settled for side dishes instead. Unfortunately, that sucked as well. I got the bottom scraps of the macaroni and cheese but I don’t understand how they could have ran out of mac n cheese thirty minutes from opening…so I figure they gave me day old sides. Not cool! I wouldn’t recommend the restaurant to anyone.
My fiance and I were in Pittsburgh this past weekend and our caterer suggested Big Mama's. I walked a few blocks to the shop but it was closed, I lingered around for a bit trying to figure out where to go and opened the door was Big Mama telling me do head down to the August Wilson Center opening. There I would find the tent where they would be selling food. So I walked ten blocks, to discover a very long line for Big Mama's House of Soul tent. I waited in line for a little over 30 mins, but trust me it was well worth the wait. I got the ribs and mac n cheese. The ribs are very tender and the sauce flavorful, it has just enough spice. I will always go to Big Mama's when I visit Pittsburgh. Thanks Big Mama!!
If I am ever on Death Row, this will be my last meal... – The inside space is small and hot but Mr. Vandross was crooning so that made it alright. My partner and I ordered two pulled pork sandwiches and they were amazingly delicious. The pork was tender and moist. The sauce was dark, thick, sweet, sour and rich. Tiny crunches of jalapeno pepper added little sparkles to the overall yumminess. I couldn't inhale it fast enough. We sat outside on one of the picnic tables and one of the employees came out, talked with us, told jokes and gave us other suggestions of things to try. Oh. If you're a Steelers fan (and if you're in Pittsburgh, you damn well better be!) there is a ton of memorabilia and black and gold to keep the eye busy. Our only regret is that we waited so long to try Big Mama's.
Consistency is the key! – I must say that if there is one thing about Big Mamas House of Soul that's a draw, it's consistency. The food is always good and alwasy fresh. By the way, it's always been open when I've gone there (and I go there a lot!) and I think her business will do just fine. We need to be more forgiving and more supportive instead of looking for a reason to not support one another.
Don't Overlook Big Mama's – Thanks to all the patrons that visited Big Mama's House of Soul, I represent the business, and I am disturbed with the review from a person whom decided to give a negative review on our services that have not even had a chance to experience Big Mama's House of Soul, to clarify the issue in which is posted , Big Mama's is a business that has overwhelming amounts of customers come to her establishment daily from in and out of the area, we are an establishment that caters to customers as they come , we apologies for the fact that the patron came at a piont where supply might not have meet demand. Feel free to give us a call the food is wonderful and the people are more amazing, thanks again folks
Soul food with plenty of heart – First visit, and felt like a regular.
Ordered BBQ rib dinner w/greens, mac & cheese, corn bread and peach cobbler.
Brenda insisted I try the sweet potatoes and I'm glad I did.
Ribs didn't need any extra sauce, they were meaty, tender and moist. Perfect balance of sweet and spicy. The greens also had a perfect blend of bitterness and spice.
The mac & cheese could have been a meal by itself and complimented the many flavors of the ribs and greens.
The sweet potatoes were a perfect contrast to the spicy flavors in the greens and ribs. These were not your typical canned yams in heavy syrup. Theses were light and "heavenly" with just the right amount of sweetness.
The cornbread was the best I've had - moist, coarse texture, intense corn flavor with bits of jalapeno peppers - fantastic.
As great as everything was, however, the best was saved for last. The peach cobbler - words cannot describe it - should be illegal! Never had such a wonderful peach cobbler - Fantastic!
My only regret is not experiencing Big Mama's sooner. A must try soul food restaurant.
Major disappointment and I haven't even eaten there yet – So after all the hype about the new soul food restaurant in the strip I couldn't wait to give Big Mama's House a try. I gathered up some girlfriends to go get some good ol soul food last Friday evening at dinner time (6:30) only to be stopped outside and informed that it was CLOSED!!!! "What do you mean it's closed? It's only 6:30." The reply was "We ran out of food." Okay so now I'm totally turned off. Big Mama will NOT make it, of this I am sure. Why is it always our people? Big Mama may know her way around a kichen but she really needs to work on the business aspect of it. I will not waste my time going there again. It seems to me that at any given time of day during what is supposed to be her business hours, you'll stand the chance of arriving to closed doors.
Great Cooking – I saw Big Mama on The CBS Early Show this morning (03/29/08) and am anxious to try her cooking next time I am in the Pittsburgh area. I also am anxious in meeting her. Great segment this morning.
