Great, Experienced Hookah Bar – The Hkan has a great atmosphere and friendly staff who have always provided me with excellent service. I'm always satisfied with their tobacco selection, and I have on several occasions tried beers there that I've never had before. I can always count on the Hkan to offer something new or different, and it's nice to go someplace with knowledgeable staff who are happy to make recommendations based on their hookah experience.
If you're hungry, I recommend the BBQ chicken wrap. Delicious! Their pizzas are also excellent.
Great shisha, great hookah lounge – I'm normally very picky about my shisha, but the staff at this hookah lounge were very knowledgeable and friendly. We ended up with a blueberry/peach mix and a strawberry base, it tasted excellent. We got free coal refills which was a welcome change (other hookah bars don't offer that).
Prices were reasonable, plus they sell all hookahs for half price before 8, which is nice.
These guys know what they're doing, had a great time!
they smoke more than just shisha – i am 100% sure the group next to us ordered something other than shisha in their hookah.. something...ILLEGAL.. (if you know what i mean)
avoid this place if you aren't into criminal activity
Love this place, unlike those fake reviews below – Just ate at the HKan, had a great time, smoked some really tasty shisha.
Staff was friendly, there was an automatic gratuity but they waitress reminded us of that to make sure we didn't accidentally tip twice.
Check out those Three 1-star reviews, all written on the same day by people with only one review in their history, smells fishy.
Looks like someone's trying to smear this excellent establishment, you should be ashamed of yourself mcapan, hookahbooka (A rival hookah bar) and jtooner33, even though I'm pretty sure you are all the same person.
Completly Dissatisfied – It was a very uniquely horrible establishment. The employees force you to buy a drink, pester you to buy food (which was less than adequate), and attempt to get you to buy the most expensive items on the list. Also, they give you false discounts, and make you pay a gratuity of 27%. Never giving another cent to those scammers.
Worst Experience – I recently attended Hkan, and upon entering, I immediately noticed a foul smell, similar to some type of gas; possibly natural gas. After looking around, I noticed they had an oven to heat hookah coals right behind the bar so I assumed this was the cause of the odor. On top of smelling this odor throughout my entire stay, I noticed relatively poor sanitary conditions throughout the facility; the worst being the restroom. When a customer enters a restroom he/she expects a clean environment. However, at Hkan you are greeted by various insects swarming around the room. I was extremely upset by the poor conditions in this particular part of the facility. The insects also made their way to our table to enjoy some of our food. Even after that, the one employee continually tried to encourage our group to purchase food/drinks. It became quite a nuisance. I am confident that I will never return to that establishment. In fact, I took the time to file a complaint to the ACHD because of the poor sanitary conditions. Please spare your money and go somewhere else.
Not a good choice for a hookah bar. I'd rather eat scat. – My favorite hookah place was closed this week so my friends and I decided to try out Hkan. We went and they promptly asked us to present id. Wasn't a problem. Then we sat down and the first thing I noticed was the table was too close to the ground. I'm not a big person(6ft 170 lbs) and I couldn't fit my legs underneath it nor could my friends. We then took a look at the menu, wide selection of flavors. The hookahs were reasonably priced. However at the bottom of the menu it says you must add 18% gratutity for Hookah service. It also makes every person in your party buy a drink if you get a hookah. To top it off the one guy working there was a complete flamer and kept asking us if we wanted to buy food. It became annoying because if we weren't buying food they weren't changing our coals. The worst part was the bathroom which had fleas in it and smelled like complete scat and was filled with grafiti. Our table that we had to end up sitting at had marks all over it of some black smudge. To top it off our server was awful. Never will consider going to again and would never reccomend. In fact, I'm going to tell people NOT to go there.
Sounded Great; Ended Up Mediocre – After reading the reviews here, my girlfriend and I decided to stop by and check it out. I'm a huge fan of hookah and my girlfriend just turned on to the idea, so both of us were impressed with the shisha selection. The price wasn't great ($12 for what one server referred to as their "sh*t stuff" and up to $22 for a good smoke) but at least the quality did improve as your wallet emptied.
Besides the shisha selection, I found this place horribly disappointing. We came by about a week ago (Friday, Apr 24th) and found the bar surprisingly (yet, pleasantly) quiet without a ton of patrons. Despite the lack of business, our server seemed more interested in complaining about the lack of people in the bar or chatting it up with other employees. Half the staff seemed drunk (or, at least, our server and the two women working around the bar) and disinterested in our experience. The only staff member who /did/ show us (and several surrounding tables) some deference was the busser (whose name started with an "L" but I remember mostly him wearing a pink shirt with the word "ROCKSTAR" on it) who seemed to not only do his job but also deliver coals to tables and strike up pleasant, interesting conversation. He came over and asked us several times how we were doing, if we needed anything, etc. and didn't wait for us to complain about the coals dying before he'd stop by and check them for us. Sufficed to say, I hope the tip I left for our server translated into a better tip out for that guy.
As someone who works regularly as a bartender in South Side, I can tell you right now that you're better off taking the few extra steps over to Lava Lounge or Margaritaville before you walk into "the Hkan" and hope and pray that if your server(s) aren't "in the mood" to serve you, that the kitchen staff makes up for them.
Relaxing and trendy, but only on certain nights! – I've been to this place a number of times, and all of my experiences have been great except the last one. The food there is surprisingly good (we had hummus & pizza that we really enjoyed) and they seem to have a large selection of beers and some good tea. Usually the place is pretty dim, with coversations being carried on in each little group of people--very relaxing and a nice way to spend some time with friends. But beware... a few weeks ago a group of friends and I were stuck paying a $5 cover because a hip hop act was performing (they were terrible), and we were placed on the upper floor which is apparently 18+ so no alcohol was allowed. We are all 21+ but weren't warned of this, and the place was so crowded and the music so unbearable that we left without ordering anything. I recommend this place on most nights, but if it looks crowded make sure you find out where you'll be seated and if this is the ambience you're looking for!
