Tips for Ryer Martial Arts Academy

So fortunate that I found this place. Part of the reason I first went to Ryer Academy is the number of excellent reviews they received on this site.

I have been looking for a place to learn a martial art where I would feel comfortable. As a woman, I often felt intimidated in my previous experiences at martial arts schools.

My first class was close to 50% female. Everyone was extremely nice, approachable and helpful. There were 3 (maybe even 4) instructors and I had individual attention. That has continued and is very important to me because it was a problem I ran into at other establishments.

I was so pleased with my first class that I signed up afterwards. I felt no pressure to do so, only enthusiasm. I have been to other places that charged less but soon quit after feeling discouraged.

It's been a couple months and I'm happy with the progress I'm making. I'm getting a good workout while learning to defend myself. I really can't say enough about how positive my experience has been.

Ryers Academy. Not that they need another good review but I LOVE Ryers. The first time I visited the gym for a "free class" I was expecting to be shown around and then pressured to sign up. I tried the class and everyone from the coach, Josh Ryer and the assistant coaches down to the students were friendly, supportive, and NICE! Once the class was done I was SO ready to sign up and pay any price because I loved it THAT much. I expected Mr Ryer to jump to take my money infact I anticapated the whole sales pitch. But no. After he spent over an hour AFTER class ended with us showing us techniques I literally had to ask him to take my money. I've been training here ever since. LISTEN. you get what you pay for. Also I'd like to mention most Martial Arts gyms I've went to were extremely impersonal and violence oriented. At Ryers the students are more disciplined, knowledgeable and INCREDIBLE athletes MINUS the Ego. If I could give them 6 stars I would.

Fantastic education for kids!. Our sons have been at Ryer for 18 months now and they are learning so much! They learn a martial art, but more importantly they learn the art of strength and control. The word of the month, the fantastic teaching, the environment as a whole all contribute.

A quick story to demonstrate: Our 4 year old son was at a friend's house. She went to the playroom after the two 4yo's left it to see how big a mess there was to clean up and found that it was clean. She went to the boys to praise them for clearing up after themselves. She called me to tell me that my son said, "We were proactive!" THAT is the word of the month!

One of the best places to train anywhere. A wonderful facility with a strong sense of community. The instructors are all very capable and totally committed to the students and the arts they teach. The variety of the classes offered makes it possible to find something to fit anyone's interests, schedule and ability. Definitely an outstanding environment to learn or train in.

Great Training and a Great Central Location in Pittsburgh. I just recently joined the Academy in september. As a 23 year old walking into a martial arts studio for the first time it was a bit intimidating. Josh Ryer and the rest of the Ryer community immediately put my mind at ease with a very down home atmosphere where everyone is welcome. In the past few months i have learned valuable skills for on the mat and off. The training is superb and the people are even better. I highly recommend The Ryer Martial Arts Academy.

Wonderful instructors. Ryer Academy has been nothing but an incredible organization to me since I have joined back in May of 2009. All of the instructors are patient, professional, and courteous while offering numerous disciplines. Variety is the spice of life, and Ryer Academy offers different programs to match different sets of wants and needs. No one is ever pressured to sign up for anything they do not want... and no one has ever been "run around".

A great place to train. The instruction from Ryer Academy is tailored for the students needs without a ' one size fits all ' policy.

Located in a safe area this is the kind of place kids and adults are made to feel safe and welcome.

If you are looking to augment you martial arts knowledge or are a beginner this is the place to go.

Highly recommended

Great martial arts program. My son has been studying with Ryer academy for over 5 years now. He is gaining is a true martial arts training. I have friends who have shelled out big bucks for their kids to hurriedly gain a black belt. If you are looking for a place where your child will have valuable instruction, motivation, support, all in a safe environment, Ryer Academy is it!

great martial arts school. Ryer Academy has excellent instruction and plenty of parking across the street in Shadyside.. Just about the safest area in Pittsburgh.

The array of classes allows for students to become versed in multiple facets of martial arts. The academy allows individuals to experience different views on how disciplines approach combat.

I highly recommend the school to any interested in furthering or starting their martial arts career

Disappointed and no parking. I have been involved in martial arts for over 24 years and I would hope I have a decent overview of what martial arts should be about. Ryer Academy is not what it should be. As a business owner myself I understand the need to be profitable, but I felt I being run around with all the differnt programs. They are trying to be all things and not really good at one particular one. Also, the area seemed unsafe at night with no parking and a seedy crowd surrounding the area. Went to a studio in Southside and was pleasantly surprised.
