Best breakfast in the city without a doubt.
As being a breakfast connoisseur, I can sadly say that Pittsburgh wouldn't know a good breakfast if it slapped 'em in the face. However, the Square Cafe seems to be the exception to this. The imaginative menu and good coffee stand in stark opposition to the standard bland, boring, awful breakfasts you'll find in most places. They typically have an interesting take on french toast that cycles in and out seasonally, they make delicious pancakes, their egg dishes are wonderful (bring back the green eggs and ham please) and the bacon. Oh the bacon it is so SO good! Never have I had thicker, meatier, crispier bacon in all my life. I would take a bath in the bacon that they make it is so good. Usually the limp, greasy excuse for bacon you find at most restaurants is enough to make you go vegetarian but not this stuff--this is THE BEST BACON EVER.
Bacon-lust aside, the interior is pleasant and the glassware/flatware is fun and colorful. The wait staff is friendly and food usually comes fast. The only real downside is that it's a small dining room which can get crowded fast and you may even end up waiting a good 40 min for a table during peak times. It is worth it if you can stand the wait.
If you're a fan of Eat 'n' Park, DeLucas or any of the other awful breakfasts in town, this is not the place for you. If, however you're tired of the same old boring breakfasts, you'll be rather pleased and will likely not want to stray far.
Now if they would just open up another location closer to the North Hills...
Editorial Review by Christy Buena. Cafe serves breakfast and offers outdoor seating, a kid's menu and serves seafood and meat platters.
Fantastic service.
From the minute my boyfriend and I walked in we agreed it was like we were being served by a group of our friends. Everyone from the woman who sat us to our incredibly bubbly, attentive (but not intrusive) server was so incredibly genuine.
Unlike some of the other reviews on this site, we both were extremely happy with our food. My boyfriend had the green eggs and ham and I had the vegetable crepe. The portion size was big enough to satisfy him that I got to finish the pumpkin walnut pancake he ordered as a side. I think it was the best pancake of my life.
Definitely perfect for a fun Sunday brunch in a group, as a pair, or by yourself.
Decent Food in a friendly, relaxed atmoshphere. You go to Square Cafe more for friendliness, cleanliness and consistency than remarkable food. The owners and staff are lovely. With just a little effort, the food could be really good, too -- they seem to use great ingredients and have good culinary intentions -- but somehow it always just comes in at average or slightly above average. They need to hire a seasoning consultant or something. And for such a popular breakfast place, there's absolutely no excuse for their poor quality home fries (but that's a problem all over Pittsburgh). Still, the energetic, friendly attitude and warm neighborhood feel make up for a lot, and Square Cafe is defnitely worth a visit for that alone.
If it were only open more!. The quality and presentation of the food is outstanding. The prices are very reasonable for what you get, and the staff is very friendly and personable. It's unfortunate that it is not open for dinner apart from Fridays and Saturdays, especially in the summertime because the outdoor seating is a prime location for people watching. It's also encouraging that they're supportive of their fellow businesses in the area, and of local artists and musicians.
Square is Hip. I go to Europe 3 or 4 times per year for biz and this place would fit in well in Zurich. The advantage is that its Pittsburgh gives you 5 months of weather to sit outside while Zurich gives you 3 (but let's stop the comparisons there). #1 - Lots of healthy food, vegetarian and energy/healthy drinks plus a hip design. That makes for a thin, hip crowd...VERY busy for breakfast on weekends but worth the wait.
Not Square Meal Cafe. This new comer to the Regent Square area offers a local eatery for the area's "family" members. The decor and location are prime though I wouldn't recommend the food. You may feel the need for clarification of your order and maybe some Tums afterwards. Do not order the home fires as they will be dark brown. PLACE IS GOOD FOR SEEING AND BEING SEEN RATHER THAN A GOOD MEAL.
