Sad but it is closing. Well the poor reviews of Three Rivers Fitness are not unfounded. I've been going there for a few years, and have developed a number of friendships there, which is why I kept going. I swore I would look for another gym, but kept going because it's a good group of fellow members. Plus, the equipment was pretty nice and rarely crowded. BUT, we just learned that they're closing the gym on July 3, 2008. While I will miss a lot of the people I worked out around everyday, I'm not surprised it's closing. Seems a development company bought the building a while ago, and promised to allow the gym to stay open for a while. But, they've changed their minds and now the gym goes. I think I'm going to look at Gold's downtown, but a lot of guys from Three Rivers have moved to Club One in East Liberty, so I don't know just yet what I'll do. Three Rivers has so much unrealized potential.............
Bad Management and Less # of good equipment. Be careful with your yearly subscriptions. They keep on charging most of the times. Also, the facility is too expensive for the price you pay. They don't have enough equipment, so exercise is not that much fun. Overall, it is not a good experience and the advice will be to find a better gym somewhere else.
AWESOME GYM. The front desk service is excellent. All the girls are very sweet and willing to help with anything you need. There is always a treadmill available for use and a parking spot they have several places you can park for free which is rare in Oakland. Great changing facilites, such as free lockers and free towel service, and you cant beat it for the price. Variety of classes with amazing instructors. Great student and UPMC discounts. AND tanning it dosen't get much better.
Member Beware!. Membership fees were deducted for two months after our contract expired despite repeated (6? 7?) attempts (by phone, in person, etc.) to prevent this from occurring. Four months after we thought the dispute was resolved (with legal consultation), another of our credit cards was billed several hundred dollars. The ownership of this operation has willfully and consistently acted illegally and unethically in executing contracts and doesn't deserve any members. I sincerely hope this will be a word to the wise: please stay away! Also I've noticed that the website (along with several staff members) have disappeared...could it be a sign that the establishment is failing?
Customer service level has plummeted!.
This gym was a great deal about a year ago. But since joining, I have found it to be a case of the management just now relaxing and raking in all the money they can., without doing anything to earn it. The changing facilties (both men and women - my wife was a memebr) are no longer clean, mine were better when I was a bachelor living in my own appartment. Water fountains have poor flow and spouts have algae growing on them. When it comes to billing, customer service is nonexistent, I have recently left eight messages and none have been returned.
They have a policy that it takes 30 days to stop billing on a membership (it is in their contract), but they have been able to speed mine up 4 days, but it coincidentally falls one day after I am scheduled to have a payment taken out of my account, so I am stuck for another month even though my one year commitment has been up for three months. I was trying to get them to stop it long before this date, but hey no one has ever called me back.
The problem wouldn't so disturbing if the staff stayed consistent. But the revolving door for employees seems to be only open for about two months and then they never come back, so you never get to deal with the same people and then messages get "lost".
I ammnot the only person who this has happened to, and am thinking of joining all of the other disgruntled former clients at Shadyside X.
AWFUL customer service.
Pros:
Gym and locker rooms are clean
Almost never to busy to get a treadmill or elliptical
Good student and UPMC discount programs
Free parking (though sometimes the lot gets full)
Cons:
It was a NIGHTMARE for me to cancel my membership (even after my contract had been up for some time)
Customer service is AWFUL, they say they will call you back and they never do (this happened to me 3+ times)
Even after they acknowledge that they made a mistake (i.e. they charged me $50 AFTER my membership had been canceled for two months) it's like pulling teeth to get them to rectify it
Front desk staff is sometimes unprofessional (often quite young and it shows)
Towels are like sandpaper
Conclusion:
I used to highly recommend this gym to people but the crappy treatment that I received once I was no longer a member left a bad taste in my mouth. It's NOT worth it. Spend your money at a facility with better managment.
