Not Bad, But it Could be A Gamble -- I
read a lot of reviews about Lobos Management before I decided to rent from them last year. As you may have also observed, most of the reviews are not very positive. They are usually written by tenants who have had problems that the management company has failed to resolve in a satisfactory manner. Knowing this critique, I was very skeptical when viewing North Oakland apartments managed by Lobos Management. Like other reviewers on this site, I was worried that, if I were to rent from Lobos Management, I would have a serious maintenance problem with my apartment and they would offer little assistance to resolve it.
In spite of this fear, the Adrian Apartments in North Oakland were, by far, the best apartments I saw when looking last August. In spite of my reservations, I decided to rent a studio from Lobos Management. I have been here for about nine months and my tenant experience has been smooth so far. Fortunately, I have not experienced any serious problems like water damage or no heat. Because I have not had these "big" problems, I can't really attest to how well Lobos can handle them - clearly it seems like a problem based on other reviews. Nonetheless, I can say that if they rent you an apartment that is relatively free of maintenance problems -- like the ones occupied by me and most of my neighbors in the Adrian -- it should be a pretty good experience. I hope this helps.
You'll be sorry.
At first, the apt. manager was very generous and helpful. A lot of people told me not to rent from Lobos, but i didn't listen because the manager was so incredibly nice.
A few days after I moved in, I realized the dish washer didn't work, so I called and asked somebody to fix it. I have been there for 7 months and nobody has looked at it. I just gave up. I called so many times and every time they said they would have somebody fix it, the repair person never came.
Over the winter, I learned there is a hole in the roof above my apt. I had a ton of water damage from the hole. Because it was cold, I could not open the windows to ventilate and mold started growing! I have never, ever seen anything like this. The mold covered all of the widow sills, because the windows leaked! The mold grew through my cupboards, closets, drawers from the moisture. It was even behind my couched, growing on the walls. I called over and over again and asked them to come and clean it, fix the windows, etc. I called one final time and told them they have 3 hours to get somebody there to fix it or I'm calling the health dept....of course, they finally came.
The apartment was beautiful when i moved in. Everything was brand new...now it looks terrible from the water damage on the carpets and walls.
Save yourself, don't trust these people!
Decent Experience in Squirrel Hill.
I rent a duplex from Lobos Management on Dalzell Street in Squirrel Hill. I came to Pittsburgh in the early summer before graduate school in order to find a place to live. At the time I scheduled an appointment with the Lobos Management Company, I was unaware of their bad reputation. My rental agent showed me a really nice place on Dalzell and I decided to lease it. Only after I went back to Illinois did I learn about the negative reviews on the internet. Needless to say, I was anxious when I entered my contract with Lobos Management.
That was two years ago. Since moving in, I have had a pretty smooth time, both in the duplex and in my dealings with the management company. I have had some minor maintenance problems. For example, I lost electricity in the living room and second bedroom. The management company sent an electrician to fix it the next day. My biggest complaint about the duplex is that the gas bill can get pretty high in the winter. Aside from that, I have been satisfied with my experience.
review from a former tenant. i rented for three years at the highland manor in shadyside and had a good experience with no run-ins with the management company. i would recommend this building.
Queensbury OK. I live in the Queensbury in Avalon. The maintenance man lives in the building too so it is easy to get repair service. Would give five stars, but there was a problem with the parking garage a couple years ago and it took about 2 weeks before I could park there again.
I have had better Pittsburgh renting experiences. I would give Lobos Management 2 1/2 stars if it was possible on City Search. My roommate and I rented a duplex on Tilbury Avenue in Squirrel Hill last year. Most of our maintenance problems were fixed, but only after placing several calls to the Lobos office and our leasing agent J_____. After we moved out, we did get our entire security deposit back, but it wasn't easy. At first, we only got about 2/3 of it... it took a discussion/argument with the property manager to get the whole thing. On the positive side, the company responded in full, and fairly, to our requests. On the negative side, it took a few "reminder" calls to make sure our concerns were met.
pretty good. I rent a 1BR in Point Breeze / Wilkinsburg. It's big apartment in a small building. My neighbors are nice and I can catch the bus to Oakland. I like the neighborhood because I can get a lot more for my money than if I lived closer to Pitt. I haven't dealt much with the management company.
...a little confused by the address. I assume these reviews are about the Lobos Management office in Shadyside, otherwise I am sorry for posting in the wrong place. I have lived in their Chateaugay building for five years and have had very few problems. I would definitely recommend it to others. In fact, I have had two friends move into the building based on my recommendation and, to my knowledge, they also have been happy with the management company. I know Lobos is a big company, so I wouldn't be surprised if not all of their buildings are maintained as well as the Chateaugay, but I have been impressed with my time here.
Good experience in Shadyside. I am beginning my third year in the "Ellsworth Place" building in Shadyside. Before I moved in, the company completely renovated the apartment by installing new hardwood flooring, a new bathroom, and a kitchen with new appliances. There was a lot of (maybe too much) paperwork before I could move in. From that point, my time here has been very good. The company makes sure the grounds are maintained and I have had very few maintenance problems. I'm not sure about the company, but based on my experience, I would recommend this building to others.
A Reasonable Option for Oakland Apartments.
i feel the need to defend this company a little. i rented a North Oakland studio from them between August 2009 and July 2011. It was not the nicest place or the best experience, but I also didn't have any of the run-ins some of the other posters to this site did. My leasing agent, R____ , responded to my maintenance texts quickly after I moved in. The maintenance staff was not always prompt, but when they showed up, they took care of my maintenance issues in a satisfactory manner.
I would not necessarily recommend Lobos, but I also would not go out of my way to avoid them. I have rented several places while working on my graduate degree, and my Lobos experience was about average. Three Stars.
