Editorial Review for South Side Tattoo – by Frances Monahan
The Scene
A decadently spacious waiting area with South-Side flavor--those high, old-fashioned, painted-over tin ceilings--this "parlor" seems more like a salon. All's quiet inside except for the muted buzz (perhaps thanks to soothing ceiling fans) of an electric needle. Walls are covered from top to bottom with "flash" (or tattoo art, as it's known in the biz). Peruse through a generous stack of books that contain flash, or see the finished product, "in the flesh" so to speak, in portfolios with photos of satisfied customers.
The Artists
Owner and artist Veronica Ray says it's hard to pinpoint a list of the most popular tattoos, since anything goes, but says tribal symbols and armband designs are fairly popular. For girls, "it's still roses, hearts and butterflies," says Ray, who has been in business at this location for four years, and apprenticed with her brother, who owns the locally famous Island Avenue Tattoo in McKees Rocks.
Other Stuff
South Side Tattoo also offers a myriad of body piercings. Let your imagination be your guide on this one, or pick up their brochure. In the meantime, you can wonder what a "Prince Albert" piercing is.

People were very friendly and professional. Approximately 8 years ago I was a CCAC student writing an English paper & chose tattooing as my topic. Veronica & her co-owner (can’t remember name) at the time were kind enough to allow me to sit in their shop and watch them tattoo and answer my questions. They were friendly and professional and did not talk down to you. Ten years later, I worked up the guts to finally get one (yes I'm a wimp) & Mike did my first tattoo (blue daisy) in April 2007 & most recently my second (sunflower) in June 2008. Mike was very patient and professional both times and the tattoos turned out better then I imagined. When I work up the guts to get a 3rd - South Side is where I will go. Great Job South Side
Pros: Excellent artists
Cons: Parking

I had my first tattoo done at South Side Tattoo and it was a great experience. I had such high hopes for how it would turn out that I knew it wouldn't be what I expected. Well, it wasn't--it was even better! Mike did mine and I'm very glad he did. Not only does it look great, but he made me feel comfortable, made enjoyable conversation, and also was very professional and helpful. I can't praise him or the place enough.
Pros: Skill, atmosphere, professional treatment
Cons: Wait time, price
