Editorial Review for Nirvana Deli – by Sam Edelmann
The Scene
This is a true hole-in-the-wall takeout deli. There is seating for four people, but most customers get it to go. Barely large enough for two cooks and a handful of customers, it is a busy place for hungry people seeking quality sandwiches. Regulars range from shopkeepers and salespeople to local college students and upscale families picking up dinner on the way home from work.
The Food
It's a small menu, with corned beef and pastrami playing the lead roles. The "Reuben and Rachel" (grilled corned beef, pastrami or turkey with Swiss cheese and sauerkraut or cole slaw) is a meal, not a snack. A full 1/3-pound of meat is placed between two very thick slices of rye. It is served with a pickle wedge and a small side of either potato salad or cole slaw. While the traditional sandwich is made with corned beef, the Nirvana's excellent low-fat turkey breast impresses, as does their roast beef.

Insider Tips
TipParking can be tough in Shadyside, but there are lots just past the restaurant.
Calling All VegansLook into the Euro salad with Genoa salami, Danish havarti, and European ham. Or the grilled vegetarian.
One and OnlyOne soup is made per day, but the attention it receives shows.
