Editorial Review for South Side Athletic Club – by Todd Thimons
The Scene
The South Side Athletic Club is hip and styled with a funky amalgam of black, red, and gray. Its studio-apartment-esque interior is brand new and uncluttered--airy, in fact. Well endowed in the area of nautilus equipment and free weights, the gym's only adequately stocked with cardiovascular machinery--six treadmills, two elliptical trainers, two stairmasters, four cycling machines.
Straightforwardness
Somewhat refreshingly, this is fitness for real people; you won't meet any big-time execs in this gym. No classes, hoop courts, or swimming pools, either. No saunas, refreshment bars, or racquetball. None of this is to be taken pejoratively. The gym is for people who want to work out, not people who want to be seen working out.

Insider Tips
At the MachinesSelect audio from four available televisions by tapping into a special earphone, provided.
ParkingThe parking situation is tolerable. Spots on side streets are ample and convenient, as long as the extra hike from car to gym is not a deterring factor.

I've been going to this gym for about 8 months now, so I figured I'd share my experiences. At first glance, as the editorial review points out, this place is pretty much "no-frills." That said, after shopping around, it made the most sense for me. It's convenient to where I work. I almost never have to wait for anything. The staff is very pleasant and responsive. People seem to be there to work out and not just to stand around flexing in the mirror, which is a big differentiator from several other local fitness places. They provide hand/sweat towels, but don't provide bath towels for the handful of customers that shower there; a mild annoyance since I'm one of them. The editorial review is low on the cardio machine counts (there are a few more now,) there ARE classes (but I haven't taken any,) and I happen to know there are some "big-time execs" who work out there, but you'd never know it because the overall tone is spot on; This gym does the basics, and does them well. As long as the full service gyms are twice the price and located inconveniently, SSAC will have my business.
