In Short
It's a one-room joint, and people are usually entrenched in deep conversation, wrapped up in their laptops or reading with the passion of a Catholic priest on Palm Sunday. Cultures mix, worlds collide, bean juice gets poured. 61C has a complete soy menu--you can get cappuccino, lattes, hot chocolates, latte mochas and more and still stick to your octo-lacto vegan ways. There are also 24 specialty and 17 regular kinds of teas.

Frankly, it's turned into a hipster hell. the coffee is so-so at best, the tes is made with water straight from the espresso machine, leaving it lifeless and completely unenjoyable. the staff seem to enjoy some sort of rivalry with the other coffee shops in the area and even threw a few jabs at a tea house down the street. but hey, if you're a pretentious hipster who wants to "see and be seen" this is the place for you. the patio is a nice spot, but frankly, it's all they've got going for them. the bathrooms are rank and they've got a grand total of two outlets. the wireless often lags and the barista shave a habit of acting as if your order is interrupting their all important conversation. (oh, and don't even think of asking them to turn off the obnoxious noise they try to pass for music, you and your headache can p*ss off as far as they're concerned.) if you're in the area, try the coffee tree for a better brew or the te' cafe instead. better prepared coffee and teas, better service and better atmospheres. oh my gawsh 06/19/2006

The 61c Cafe is one of those cafes that seem plain when you first enter. But soon you realize that it is truly an amazing place. From their first rate coffee to their baristas, the 61c is one of the best cafes around.

The 61c has a very nice, broad tea selection that's visible in canisters on the wall. Their free wireless makes them very popular with students. There are generally 4 plug seats near the front (that people with laptops generally all try to take. The pastries they have are good (although expensive). The 61c is a great place to hang out. You will want to ask them to put ice in the teapot before brewing the tea, or you will likely get burnt tea (which is a pity given how good some of their teas are).

When to Go:
Weekend afternoons and nights are seriously busy, which makes for a great scene, but a sometimes long wait for a table.
