Layed out like a five-'n'-ten, Shadyside Variety Store is a corner store packed with a grab bag of solid toys and games. Founded in 1947 as "Notions, Import Toys, Stationery, General Mdse," this place is a one-stop trip back in time.
The Goods
Specializing in toys that promote learning, creativity, and exercise, the selection features a huge Lego collection, from Duplo (the big ones) to the Classic series. Board games include checkers, bingo and chinese checkers along with brain games like maze books, Mad Libs, 3-D puzzles and Yes & Know books. Crayons, art supplies and pens help with the coloring books, ceramic, paint and candle-making kits. Kids can also learn to make tye-dye shirts, candy necklaces and mood lamps.
