A Cultural District supper club for mature music fans and casual diners.. The Scene
A mural featuring music icons Ella Fitzgerald, B.B. King and others greets guests at the entrance. Sleek black tables, indirect lighting, brick walls and steel girders set an industrial yet intimate tone. The well-lit stage seems within arm's reach of the dining area, and plush couches offer respite to dancers. A glass-lined bar provides the middle-aged, professional clientele with wine, scotch and cigars. Dowe's jazz- and blues-heavy music menu includes big band, salsa and more.

The Food
The diverse selection, with lots of Italian and soul-food influences, includes everything from veal Milano to collard greens. Start with stuffed mushroom caps with sausage and cheese and try the herb salmon with sauteed spinach and lemon buerre sauce. Finish with the fresh strawberry cheesecake.

rapid deterioration-new ownership?. I went to Dowe's in 2003 and had a great experience-the food was really good (the best lobster bisque I had ever had) the jazz artists were excellent & the dance floor was a nice touch that is not often found in jazz restauants/clubs. Overall, the atmosphere was classy and warm. I returned the following year and was BEYOND DISSAPOINTED. After being perfunctorily greeted, seated, and handed a menu that consisted of a laminated piece of fluorescent paper by a waitress wearing tight black clothing and a light-up necklace, my fiance and I were extremely confused. Dowe's had seemed to be a cultural beacon in the city--finding it cheapened was just sad. All we could do was leave. Unfortunately, a once-worthwhile place is now a waste of time-- without even an explanation as to how it got that way.

It was horrible!. I can't believe that this restaurant got a rating so high. I have never been so shocked in my life. The manager was in competent, the food took over one hour after the salads to be served, the server was rude, the silverware and flatware was dirty -- twice! They had no wine selection and they were out of many different types of liquor. Finally almost half of the menu items were changed or not available. It was a Wednesday night and they were not busy, so I don't understand why there were so many problems. DON'T GO!!!
