Editorial Review for Eliza Furnace Trail – by Frances Monahan
The Skinny
Eliza Furnace Trail is affectionately known to locals as the "jail trail" because a section of it passes by the Allegheny County Jail. This exercise route for in-line skaters, bikers, walkers and runners is probably one of the most enjoyable nature experiences you'll ever have. There are cars traveling on both sides of you at times (the trail runs parallel to the Parkway East) and while the trail is tree-lined, the trees aren't mature yet.
The Ambience
There are portions of the trail, open only since June 1998, where you won't be able to hear what your fellow in-line skaters are saying because of surrounding noise levels. The 2.5 miles of trail follows the former Baltimore & Ohio railroad tracks, and spans from downtown to Greenfield. The trail was named after the Eliza Blast Furnaces, and is part of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail. Speaking of furnaces, the trail can be brutally hot in summer, so bring plenty of water.
