Editorial Review for Monongahela Incline – by Bob Braughler
The Skinny
Around the turn of the century, nearly a dozen inclines carried workers between Mount Washington and the city and its factories below. Today, only two of those inclines still exist--the Monongahela and the Duquesne. The historic Monongahela Incline opened in 1870, and has been beautifully restored in recent years. Steeper and shorter than the Duquesne Incline, the Monongahela travels 635 feet at a 35-degree angle.
Where It Takes You
Its lower station sits adjacent to Station Square, which makes a trip on the incline an ideal companion to a day of shopping and dining at one of Pittsburgh's favorite destinations. At the top, the Monongahela Incline deposits passengers amid Mount Washington's famed restaurants and scenic overlooks. The Monongahela Incline is operated by Pittsburgh's Port Authority Transit.
